Maybe you should suggest they carry peace pipes too for better success.
Or at least mention the tradition. Then maybe it will make more sense to them.

Maybe someone just gave the guy a bowlfull of Mixture #79? :P
If I may ask Bubba... why do you take your name-tag off? Were you told to do this? Does the hotel not wish to have its employees seen smoking? Next will be wearing a Nixon mask.

I've never had a bad experience with another pipe smoker, but had a truly malicious experience with a woman who worked in a pipe store that I had come to consider to be one of the best in the country. I finally concluded that she had her employers fooled as well. It's hard to forget, because I've always considered tobacconists to be a special group of people.

No I take it off because the hotel's name badges say "RIverwind" in big letters even though it is followed up by "Hotel" everyone reads "Casino" and I get 20 different people coming up to me asking if I can help them, or where this is, etc... It got really annoying until someone came up to me to asked me a question, I informed him that I didn't actually work in the casino, and he ask why am I wearing a name badge then! *Derp* So I took it off and haven't had a problem yet!

I didn't go into detail because I still find the whole experience so unpleasant that I didn't look forward to repeating it. For the time being, let me just say that her name was Nicole.

Oh No!

The name Nicole translates to "The Hater Of Pipes".

Thank God she didn't cast her spell onto you!

No - it works the other way around - the God of Tobacco is always at work. Take this example from today's headlines. Santa Clara County was the first place in the country to pass a ban against people smoking in apartments and townhouses that they own. Now, in today's news you can read about how they are submerged in toxic waste.

I haven't had any bad one on one experiences, but there is a shop in Boston, that makes me feel like I am regressing to when I first started smoking a pipe and was nervous about what people would thing. To this day I go in there, and feel I am interrupting something that is going on or that I am just a waste of time for them. So now I only go there for emergencies, otherwise I make the trek to NH where I am welcomed whole heartedly.

I'm sorry to hear about your encounter with the rude pipe smoker. I've never had an experience like that. Maybe it's because I'm only 25, so pipe smokers my age are so few and far between that they're happy to meet a brother of the briar - and older pipe smokers seem intrigued at the sight of someone my age packing a pipe.
I guess it goes to show, though, you can't judge a person by his pipe.

Ok, I had my first unfriendly experience with another pipe smoker last week.
Walking around in downtown St. Petersburg I saw a guy coming towards me smoking a pipe. He looked like he was about 50 - 55 years of age. (I am 47.)
I wasn't smoking a pipe myself as I should have been. (I'm a little ashamed at that.)
But I smiled at the guy and said, "Hey, I see you are smoking a pipe! What kind of pipe is it?"
At which point he put it in his pocket and increased his pace away from me.
Maybe he thought I was an anti-smoking Nazi?
We were at my condo building on the side where the public can access the public parking garage.
I was on my way in anyway, so I followed him into the elevator. I was in the process of getting a PipesMagazine.com business card out of my wallet to introduce myself when the elevator stopped at the 2nd floor and he ran away before I could do so.
That was disappointing.

Kevin think about what harm you did to that poor 'Wanna be Piper'.
The man will never be the same again since his encounter with you. )-:
However, there is a Bright Side to your story, that being that you can ask him if he has any pipes for sale.

Following the white rabbit
The vast majority of fellow pipe smokers I meet are a good bunch, but one does run into the grouch once in a while. I met one such grouch in a little bar in Oklahoma once. I am guessing he was 70+.
He was sitting next to me at the bar and smoking his pipe. I pulled out a Peterson, packed it, and lit it up. I tried to strike up a conversation with the old fellow but got pretty much the same sort of single word responses from the guy.
Takes all kinds, I suppose.
