I’ve mentioned in a couple places on here I recently opened and had a couple bowls from a tin of C&D Joie De Vivre. Englishes are my preferred genre, and while the blend scores admirably on tobaccoreviews.com, I find it smells and tastes radically different from any of the other two dozen or so English blends I have tried, and in a substantially off-putting way. While the plug looks perfectly fine, the tin note is remarkably similar to chicken litter, and that remains dominant in the taste when smoked. I am not speaking in hyperbole here. Having grown up on a farm, that particular note is unmistakable. I have tried many other blends that have a reputation for being polarizing (this isn’t one, as far as I know); none of which, to my taste, have been anywhere near this offensive. My question is, could I have simply gotten a bad batch? How common is that?

**I mean no offense to any C&D affiliated folks that may happen across this post. I love Star of the East Flake and Rajah’s Court, which is in part why I am wondering what is up with my unexpected experience with Joie de Vivre here.

Put it away in a jar for a week or two and try again. There are cases of bad batches, but I don't think they are very often.
Unless you’re talking 2016/2017..... just about everything C&D put out had mold (of course I’m exaggerating, but quite a few blends suffered mold issues :Red Flake, Autumn Evening,Bijou.....

Drop in a bucket. I believe that issue has been addressed by C&D. How much pipe tobacco has been produced, and that one bad year hit that one blending house?

Any of their blends with Red Virginias from the Summer of 2016 I will no touch.

by the way one of my favorite C&D blends smells like cheese that has gone bad. Tuskegee Airman. It smells like feet and also tastes nothing like any other english blend I've tried. It tastes great and I always wonder if the room note is as nasty as the tin note.

An update for this thread: I opened the jar. The smell has mellowed noticeably, so I packed a bowl. Not my favorite smoke, but it’s decent now. That original offensive smell is on my fingers now though lol. No bad batch here, by my judgement.
