When purchasing tins from a B&M, is it okay to ask the proprietor for the oldest dated tins? Since I'm just starting to select tobaccos, and virginias especially do well with some age, I'd like to tryout some older stuff before stocking my own cellar.
Sure, why not? You're dropping coin.

When I first started smoking a pipe, and my first time at The Briary, I asked about tins with age on them, and Skip led me to a closet with a bunch of old tins with all having over six or so years on them, and he let me get whatever I wanted from it.

And, when I went to an old Tinderbox owned by this 70+ years old guy, when I asked why he didn't have any tins, he said that he couldn't sell them before they went past the expiration dates. He had thrown all of the old tins out with the garbage, ha ha.

Life is like a box of chocolates... ha ha.

Yep. Not all that long ago, in the geological terms, you could buy "old" tobaccos at a significant discount because they were "old". Times have certainly changed.

At one of my local B&M's they have Cornell & Diehl style tins stacked on each other in columns, in no particular order. With all the contrasting label styles and fonts, it takes a while to scan them all. They don't seem to mind. Old tins that have developed a bulge stand out because the stack will wobble if disturbed.

My B&M is kinda self-serve, meaning the tins are just out in the open. I rarely encounter another pipe smoker there (mostly cigar guys), so I take my time and check dates. Posted in another thread, but I found a tin of 2016 Mac Baren Symphony a couple weeks ago doing this.

I always check for the most recent roast date for any coffee beans I buy at a local shop or ask for that if they are back on a shelf I can’t reach - not all that different.
