Reading the BBC news website over coffee this morning I came upon this story of storm 'Babet' that is currently affecting much of the UK but mostly up in eastern areas of Scotland.

If I hadn't seen this video clip I wouldn't have believed it. Matey's dog looks well spooked.

Anyone here ever seen anything like this?

Jay.

That looks so crazy! I’ve never seen anything like that before. If I saw that in real life it would probably freak me out a bit!

I live in a state where the wind can, and will, lift and blow over a tractor-trailer rig (lorry for those of you who prefer that word) unless it is carrying a full load. Wind can be frighteningly powerful.

Go to Kielder forest in a storm and you'll see lots of that. After the big storm two years ago it looked like an air-blast bomb had gone off up there. I wouldn't have lingered in such a place in those conditions though. Incredibly dangerous. When large numbers of trees start letting go all hell can let loose very quickly.

Yeah back during Sandy and the tree (1 of 3 in a row) fully tipped and landed on my house. The other two tilted sideways and got stuck into each other due to the ground lift of the first pushing the middle tree into the 3rd tree.

I was looking out the window in the picture as it happened. 100 foot pine trees.

The strongest tornadoes have wind speeds at ground level in excess of 300 mph.

What sort of crazy stuff can result from that? It defies description. Peeling entire roads off the ground has been documented several times.

I live smack bang in the middle of the Roaring Forties and the wind here is life altering. We spend most of our life in wind over 30kmh, it takes its toll on you physically and mentally as it's pretty relentless. This is our farm weather station anemometer recordings for the last 7 days. you can see how harsh winds just arrive and then fall away but in winter they remain constant. couple this with 250 rain filled days of complete cloud cover and darkness and you have a tough environment.

That's so crazy. And no, I've never seen anything like that. But I am a Miami native. So I have seen what wind can do. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 shredded houses and buildings in the southern part of the city. 🌀 weather is amazing!

Yup, I've seen many a tree felled by the wind, but to actually see the ground undulating like that I thought really amazing.

I suppose if you have a shallow depth of soil on top of a bed of rock, trees can't root as deeply as they'd like to.
