As you will soon discover, I haven't given this much thought, but something protective might work.

How about devising something that looks like a metal washer that can be somewhat securely,

but temporarily set on the rim during lighting; then removed after the charring light?

It wouldn't have to be a perfect fit. I'm guessing something with a .75" inside diameter.

Maybe a spring loaded wind protector with the central mesh removed.

For charring, its fairly simple...don't fill the tobacco chamber to the top.
A soft flame from a lighter or match will be directed down to the tobacco by puffing.
That's it.
I get tarring all the time, thats normal and it can be cleaned easily, but there isn't any use to burn the bowl rim.
That's charring, caused by bad technique.
Tarring and charring.
Two different animals.

I do not see the char as a blemish. Chard rim lends a warmth to the pipe's appearance. When I do get around to cleaning, it comes right off; and if it doesn't....that's ok too.
