I purchase the bulk of my pipe tobacco online and I always order whatever the minimum is for free shipping. For the past two years I had been spending around $100-$150 a month and then this year I told myself I would only round-off my cellar with harder to find blends that I happen upon. That lasted for five months or so and since father's day I have been spending close to $300 a month on a mixture of pipes and tobacco. I just placed a $450 order with CupoJoes that arrived yesterday, which is the largest TAD order I've had to date. I decided I want to try to increase my cellar by 50 lbs and have been in a hurry to get there.
On rare occasion I stop by my B&M, which is 90% cigars and 10% pipe tobbacco, to grab a tin or two but due to the cost difference and severely reduced inventory I have a hard time spending my monthly allowance there.
That's my story...

To date, I have been averaging $150-200 with the rationale that I would stop at the free shipping threshold (TAD easily trumps the 'free shipping threshold' I have found) and then blowing right past it...
I have spent a RIDICULOUS amount of money on pipes in the last 6 weeks relative to my income. My wife, understanding til now, made me open the 6 boxes of pipes that had accumulated during the week in front of her and we have agreed that my total of 180 (give or take a few) is enough pipes.
So now, I figure I can start TAD again in about 2 months. I will keep it to the $100/order mark and likely be like my brother from another mother in Poulsbo and do bi-monthly orders.
=D

wyfbane, i.e. bane of the wife. 180 pipes seems about right for that. I say keep up the good work, champ!

Also intrigued by the free shipping, so my last order was $100 or so, yielding about three pounds of tobacco (bulk and tins) Order before was same, but included a $65 pipe. Also pick up stuff at B+M shops in the area.

I'm a free ship threshold kinda guy, too. I usually place one order a month. But I've been known to place several orders a week!

Not sure but I must have bought 45lbs of tobacco over the last 3 years. So that gives an idea.

I am a sucker for free shipping, I always spend the minimum to get it. I really don't have a limit, no spouse to stop me and only the limit on the CC. I know, I am a sick man, but I love seeing packages at the door when I get home.

Most months I order twice a month form online sources. My orders have to pass through Canadian custom so I try to keep the around $40-$60 and try not to exceed 5 or 6 tins or stay just over half a pound or so. Some months I get a little carried away and order three or four times but usually it's just two.

Great thread.
I buy 99% of my tobacco online. My orders are always 200 grams or less and I usually do two orders a month. If I stay within that limit it's about 150 bucks a month, including shipping.

I always get free shipping. I average about 2 pounds a month bought, and about 6 ounces a month smoked, so my cellar grows by just over a pound and a half per month.

Pretty simple answer... no more than I need, which isn't all that much considering that I only smoke about two bowls a day.

Ditto. Usually enough to get free shipping though I rarely order tobacco any longer unless I luck out with Stonehaven or something. Though I did pick up a few tins of Six Pence in a trade so I will order a bunch of that. Maybe a dozen two ounce tins and a couple eight ounce. Oh, then there is Chenet's Cake that Bonehead turned me on to. Oh, and Hu Tobaccos. Good source for Germain's Brown Flake plus their own line.
Just when you think you are done ordering tobacco, they pull you back in!

When I'm ordering from the US, which is international for me, I tend to order just under the kg, so 19 McClellands sized tins.
I'm lucky in that my local B&M carries every UK available blend so when I'm in the UK I just walk in and buy whatever I need, be it one tin or ten tins. I like to support local shops they offer a service that's more than just the selling of tins of tobaccos.

I don't get to smoke as much as I might like by virtue of the nature of working in a non-smoking environment (hospital) and a wife who is less than tolerant about my smoking (in her defense, she is a melanoma survivor and is sensitive about cancer). So I probably have enough tobacco cellared to last my lifetime. When I do buy tobacco it is exactly what I need to smoke and always on sale. Never get to $100.

There is no disfunction regarding my tobacco orders. I keep a supply for about6 years or so, and to keep smoking aged tobacco I order annually to replenish.

I probably average out to somewhere around $50/month. Sometimes that's in a $100 order once every few months, sometimes that's in more frequent smaller orders. When I look at my pattern, it I would be patient and always buy $100 at a time (but less often) for the free shipping...if have a few more tins in the cellar.
I had a $100 order this month, and don't plan to order again until October, which is difficult.

I'm still new enough to pipe smoking that I'm exploring different blends by different blenders, so I usually get only a tin of a given blend, and restrict myself to 4 tins at any one time. The Bjarne Viking blends, for example, were introduced in a set of 4, as were the two Tsuge tinned tobacco offerings. I have identified a few blends that I'll be cellaring/aging, so I allow myself more of those, especially those that come in larger containers or in bulk - as with my last order, which consisted of 5 tins of Escudo and 4 oz. of Luxury Bullseye Flake (still on sale...) 8)

Once a month 500 gramms strictly for the Cellar, thats about 18 oz which will come to EUR 110 - 130

+ 1-2 tins for immediate consumption/tasting

As I'm a 1 bowl per day guy my backlog on tobaccos to try is growing and growing
