Interesting! Unfortunately I don't want to spend lots of hours and money painting a 28'x14' roof to find out. Besides, I kind of like killing the little bastards.

I have had the extremely satisfying experience of dumping gasoline into a ground nest of yellowjackets and igniting it, at the family cottage.
We used an old glass bottle so the gas pourer (my BIL) could dump it all (with some around the hole on the ground) and drop it, and then he ran into a car (away from the house) . A few yellowjackets came out, but none got him. I had a small stick that I sprayed with lighter fluid and lit, which I then threw at the hole, and then ducked back inside the house. My aim was good and ignition successful. who knew chores could be so much fun?

This is very true. Have done it for years and it works. First heard about doing this years ago in New Orleans.
Many insects are horrific, evil creatures...truly the stuff of nightmares.
It's only because they are so small that we're not living in a monster movie.
For most flying insects I use Fabuloso cleaner - it dissolves ants on contact and kills most flying hornets - I think it has ammonia in it and has a nice pleasant lavender smell. For yellow jacket nests in the ground --- a skunk will dig up the nest and eat all the bees when they can find them - at least they do around here.
Around here getting stung just goes with the territory. Now when I see a wasp nest I just ignore them unless I need what they have.
Ive told the story here about the old timer who used to deliver our propane. Wasps love building their nests under the lids of the propane tanks. The old guy would open the lid, then grab the nests and smoosh them in his hands. His hands are so leathery hes not even sure if they sting him or not.
My hands would be like that if I didn't need to keep them able to preform fiddly tasks, like connecting nerves and tying sutures.

My wife mowed over a ground hornet hole while cutting the grass. Got 19 stings
It doesn't help that the insects of the world outnumber us humans by several billion to one.
Several years ago, when I opened the back yard shed, a cloud of wasps shot out. I'm not a fast person any more, but I believe that I saw one of them land on the right lens of my glasses just as I made a standing back-flip-somersault away from the shed. Although I managed to avoid getting stung, I did have to go to the hospital because my landing buggered-up something in the back of my right knee. Ended up wearing a wire-and-canvas thingy outside my pants leg for a few days.
After one of my Dad's old trucks became less-than-roadworthy, he kept it around so that he could run a hose from the exhaust into the open holes of whatever nesting critters and bugs might be down there.

My wife recently reminded me of a situation her mom went through years ago.
She was outside working on her new landscape. She lived in Glendale Arizona near Phoenix.
She moved a flower pot when about 6 wasps attacked her. She got stung 3x. She ran for her sliding deck door, but remembered to kick off her outside shoes, and slip into her house shoes. Thats when a scorpion stung her foot.
She had been stung by a scorpion before while smelling a bouquet of flowers her boss gave her. The scorpion stung her nose.
The wasps were a new thing, but mixed with the scorpion sting, she considered calling someone. But no, she was a tough lady who growed up on a farm here in Western PA. She said she had a headache for 2 days, and lost feeling up to her knee for 3 days....no harm caused.
