I was moving some old pipes with my nephews this fine afternoon and we disturbed a wasps nest. Luckily I took the brunt of the attack and was stung seven times. My nephews escaped sting free. I got to share the old wives tale of wet tobacco on my wounds. No idea if it works, just a fun thing to do. The pipes lay abandoned but I did get my revenge; I sprayed the hell out of it with wasp spray.

The Benedictine:

Thank God, with seven stings, that you did not develop anaphylaxis! For those who may not be aware of this potentially fatal reaction, here is a link to the Anaphylaxis page on the Mayo Clinic's Website.
My sister, a nurse, was worried. They stung me only in my right arm. Damn thing is sore and I have 3 knots. The one in my bicep was the worst.

I remember a friend who was chased by hundreds of bees. He was so scared that he dropped his car keys. He was in an open field, and in the end he managed to get into the vehicle, but he says he was terrified. He told me about it laughing, saying it was like a scene from a horror movie and funny at the same time, as he rolled around on the ground like a croquette in flour. I wish you a speedy recovery, friend The Benedictine.

We have a summer problem with Yellow Jackets wanting to make nests on the underside of our patio roof. I have a small garden sprayer that I keep just for them. A shot of gasoline, or any petroleum distallate, will kill them. Here's a couple of tips: Hit them after dark when they are all on the nest and don't smoke your pipe while doing it!!! puffy

I keep seeing these videos online where they remove wasps nests (admittedly while they are smaller and just beginning to take shape) with a container of gasoline.

I feel like if I attempted that, I'd end up getting myself hurt.

Most important......did you get the pipes and did the wasps leave them alone? Did any wasp spray get on the pipes?

Mark it down as another difference between children and grownups. Messing with wasps was an exciting way to pass the time growing up in Georgia. Water hose, firecrackers, gasoline, you name it. You haven't lived until you've had to shake yellow jackets out of your clothes. Hornets on the other hand....

I got stung by a hornet last year for the first time on my leg stump. Couldn't wear my prosthetic for a week.
