I run a pipe tool around the bowl also. Then grip by shank and lightly tap against my palm. I repeat if necessary.

I usually smoke my tobaccos down to a nice white ash as well, so all I do is use the poker of my pipe tool and break it up a little then dump it out into the ashtray. After that I use the reamer to lightly clean the inside of the bowl and then run a pipe cleaner through it, or as Sean Connery says in Murder On The Orient Express "My peep cleaner".

I do NOT dump ashes like my father did... hammering his pipes against whatever hard object was available... like a demented carpenter.
I try to smoke down to an ash, then stir up the ashes with the scoop end of the pipe nail and VERY GENTLY tap... not the rim of the pipe, but the side of the bowl against an ashtray.
As for pieces of the rim of cob pipes flaking off, just expect that. They will do that because of the heat/expansion of smoking regardless of how you dump the ashes.

I actually use the pick or the spoon on my pipe tool and loosen the tobacco and ash off the bottom, and I find that the contents all fall out into an ashtray rather easily. If there are some lone bits leftover in the bottom, I turn the pipe upside down, with the bowl facing down toward the ashtray, and give it a good old fashioned trumpet blow. Tada! No more ashes!

I went to the thrift store, bought a big ashtray and super glued the hell out of the cork, (that adhesive on the back don't work for shit, Since It's sitting outside all the time)

when I'm driving, i use the "flick the pipe real hard out the window" method...seems to work great!!

I use my pipe tool and the palm of my hand.
But every once in a while I'll loosen the ash and then put my thumb over the chamber. I then shake the pipe with the loose ash in it. This helps to evenly coat the inside of the bowl to aid in building an even cake.

I use a champagne cork with a magnet glued on the bottom, I have a Indian made brass ash tray it sticks to, when I am done or it needs to be washed just pull off cork and toss the ash tray in dish washer. multi purpose and saves burns from friends cigars and cigs.

i have a plastic bucket ashtray (dollar store special) only have to empty it once a week. I will tap on the plastic but for the most part i always run pipe tool around the bowl when im done. Not a huge fan of big cake anyway. If im outdoors, i just hit it on my hand or leg.
