I find that I will usually dump the white ash if it builds up quite a bit. If I'm down to the last third of the bowl, usually there is quite a bit built up, so I'll use my tamper-poker to gently loosen the white ash, and dump it.

That's such a personal question.... You'd be better off asking if I eat the heart of the dragon I slay every week.

at times, I stir the ash a slight stir, so it levels out a bit and mixes just a little with the burning baccy. I have also been reprimanded for doing this. I too am going to start dumping (sorry) more. Small detail....yet helpful for a better smoke. Thanx for the tip.

I rarley dump. But, when I do, I tamp and re-light. I'm just not a big tamper. Never have been. But, it is an essential tool.

I'm a fairly new member and pipe smoker. I thought I might have my first post with the dump at relight question but the more experienced and wiser beat me to it. Great advice in this string. I'm going to try dumping excess ash when I need to relight. It makes sense to me that removing extra ash will allow more air flow and create a more successful relight...and possibly the need to do so less often. Thanks to all of you for providing your thoughts on this site - it has made my introduction to pipe smoking very enjoyable. Kind of like golf for your soul...only here I don't need to keep score!

Back to the pipe smoking end of the discussion, with most of the blends I smoke, I don't feel I need

to dump ash. Tamping seems to be sufficient. Even dusting the light ash off the top seems to unsettle

the packed tobacco and doesn't improve the smoke much or at all. Now and then dumping the ash is

effective, when there is clearly quite a bit of unburnt tobacco left in the bowl, but also quite a layer of

white ash on top. Now and then, it helps, mostly not.

I dump when and if I have to relight. Relights are poor with accumulated ash.

Amen Brothers! Ain't no science to it, ash is an insulator, that's why the dumb sh1ts can walk on "hot coals" at the pricy seminars. Carefully dump that ash and relight.
Points at a barbeque if you dump the ash on some annoying persons shoe...oops, sorry, my bad...
