Starting to Get Obsessed

I quit cigs January 23, 2013 then in November I got the urge to smoke again. I smoked about 4 cigs and decided if I was going to smoke it was going to be a pipe. Have wanted to for 40 years but never could get away from the cigs. Bought my first pipe December 5, 2013 and haven't even thought about smoking a cig. YOU CAN DO IT!

I just did this when i got my first my basket pipe. Now i have a Lorenzo Spitfire and a Chacom Punch and i inhale them all with no shame. Every once in a while my gf forgets and hands me a cig and I'll take a drag and tell her all i can taste is cancer and paper. It took about a month to totally give them up, about as long as a nice cake took to form on the basket. Oh yeah it started pretty much on my join date. Good luck!!!!

I gave up cigarettes many times. The last worked. It was in 1994. The method was one cigarette less a day until I got to zero. Smoking a pipe helped. If you cold turkey it can be rough. This method is easy.

Didnt go so well this morning, smoked a few, busy rushing around. But I got myself back on track by lunchtime, I think keeping a pipe loaded with Nightcap on hand is going to be useful. I can light it up and inhale a few puffs to help fight that nasty craving, plus the nic kick is pretty strong, so it curbs the urge.

I wish you the best! I've tried a variety of cigarettes (mostly foreign), but always as a pipe smoker -- that is, I've never inhaled or gotten addicted to the nicotine. (I don't actually enjoy nicotine.)
I would think the biggest challenge would be learning not to inhale the pipe.

Thanks rsuninv, believe me, the Jacknife stays on the tray.
Bob, it isnt too tough not inhaling, most pipe tobacco doesnt appeal to me tht way. But there are times when I get that really bad craving, so for now I have been sneaking a few inhales from Nightcap alone. Really the hardest part of switching is the time. Its easy to catch a 5 min cig, but with kids and wife, and being in the Army, it can be tough to sneak a 30 min pipe.

fading:
There's nothing wrong with smoking part of a bowl, letting your pipe go out, and then finishing it later when you have the time. Not sure I'd recommend that for a five-minute smoke, but you certainly don't have to smoke an entire bowl at one time.

Fadingdaylight, good for you friend, you'll really start to feel better. It's been 2 months for me, try to stay away from the E cigs. I was having strange chest pains with those. After I quit those too I feel fine. Good for you. P.S. I tried the Camel snoos for a week and that helped with the nicotine craving.

Pipetraveler, I tried the ecigs a while back. Managed to stay off the cigarettes for about 3 months. But sure enough, I was out and about one day when my battery died and, like a true addict, I wound up with a pack of Marlboros. Pipes don't have this issue. It is relatively no-fail. Pack, light, enjoy.
That said, yesterday was a pretty epic fail on my part. I spent most of the day in the car, and both of my kids were with me, so I couldn't just pack bowl after bowl and go. That, and Seattle traffic stresses me out. But, come this morning, I smoked my first pipe, then tried to light a cigarette, only to pitch it about 6 drags in. Just didn't want it. They are more of a convenient fix than an enjoyable smoke. Getting closer anyway.

Ok, it has been a busy couple of days, but here is a brief update:
I suck. I am not doing half as well as I wanted to be, but I am making progress. Biggest issue I'm facing right now is that my wife is a cigarette smoker too. She's using patches and the cut back method, and I was trying to go cold swap. But since the nails are still around, I keep reaching for them. Some days it will only be one, others it could be 6. Now that is down a lot from the pack and half a day I smoked for nearly 20 years, but still not quite the place I want to be. I guess as she quits, I will quit.

So, another week gone by and yet my progress is not where I want it to be. Made some progress in the way of pipe acceptance at home. But I am still being told that putting down cigarettes in favor of pipes isn't quitting. Closer and closer, I guess. I'm putting Foggy's method into practice today, starting at 6, on down to 1 on Saturday. The misses is putting me to shame, she had 1 yesterday.
