Aw, hell, I still use usenet! FB gets surfed once a day, with added time for a group for which I am the FB poster. I hit the "remove posts like these" with some regularity. But it is a morass. I don't tweet, blog or instal-pin-whatever. But I do find texting sometimes a blessing. Mixed, but mostly useful.

older people.... refer to Henny Penny.
You lost me? Who, and or what is ‘Henny Penny’?
Anyway... true story. About three weeks ago I went for a walk in the afternoon, as I occasionally do, and I happen to live somewhat near the high school I attended. As it turned out I was walking down the street that many of the kids walk down when school lets out which turned out to be an expedition into the zombie like cell phone culture. Every kid was walking three or four abreast and not one, and I mean not ONE was talking to each other and they each had their head buried in a cell phone. I finally realized that that I could either walk off the sidewalk after bumping into several of them (as they refused to look up), or stand my ground and refuse to constantly step aside and walk on some ones lawn so as to dodge their zombie like state. I chose the latter and refused to step aside and collided with one after the other, both male and female, and actually knocked one down when they lost balance.
Granted, this was quite stupid on my part considering my age, but I was eventually seething with anger and the stupidity of it all. It wasn’t so much the fact that they were using their cell phones, but that all of them were totally oblivious to their surroundings. Can you imagine some young women walking down that street with a child in a stroller, or perhaps some person who was in need of a cane and having to constantly move aside off of the sidewalk to avoid a multitude of kids in a zombie like trance on their cell phones or otherwise being knocked down!
My daughter is 43 and admittedly uses the cell phone a lot (aside from the computer) because of her job, but even she admits that there is a limit and sets a limit on its use and refuses to give my granddaughter a cell phone until she is in high school and can at least pay for half of it. I was never strict with my daughter (spoiled the hell out of her), much less my granddaughter who I also spoil, but I guess at least I succeeded in instilling some semblance of common sense in her. Well, that and to keep the damn kids off of her freaking lawn!

You can be as public or private as you wish on FB. It's only as evil as you let it be. I belong to several very good pipe related pages with a lot of activity.

I agree with dochudson. FB is a decent way for me to keep up with old friends and stay in touch. I've had few bad experiences and use it just a I said. I do like more topics centric forums such as this too.

Amen - I've always considered it the Evil Empire, and refused to go anywhere near it.

I am all over a number of different fora. I am not and have never been on FB. Anyone from my past that I want to keep up with I call or go and see. The others are no longer meaningful to me.
Sometimes you can have a friend who is your freind only because you have known them so long. You might not even really like them. Life is too short to hangout with folks you don't like.

I have escaped Facebook. If I wanted daytime TV, I'd tune in to Lifetime Movie Network on cable...

Nothing posted on the internet is private.. what would they find out about me? I smoke pipes and cigars. I support several GSP rescue groups. Fly fish and spend Jan - May in FL. I've recently been in contact with some HS friends as we are planning our 50 year reunion and with a total of 58 in the class pretty much everyone has joined our FB group. Besides those drones following you know way more about you then FB.

I don't care for most of the people I went to high school with.
Hell, I don't even remember most of the people I went to high school with. Of course that was 50+ years ago so that might explain it.

58 grads in a town/school district of 3k people. I think 40 or so of the 58 did all 12 years together. I still live in the area as do probably 50% so it's not usual to run into someone in our only grocery or one or our two gasoline stations.
If folks are afraid of FB it's because they don't know how to use it. I could give my name as it appears in FB and you could not find me.

As an aside, I think this Forum is a difficult format to sustain. I think the subject matter in this case helps, being both specialized and specific. I has to be carefully defined and especially meticulously moderated. The internet is full of horrific stuff from the sick and crazy, so this is an oasis. Unlike Facebook, this is also commercial, but openly so. Facebook has so many different ways to make a buck beyond the understanding of its membership that it is innately corrupted in my opinion. Some of this is carefully contrived by its ownership, and much of it is invented by opportunism, inside and outside the ownership. I suppose it's kudos to those who understand the intricacies of the technology and can make a fortune. And it is not necessary to cultivate conspiracy theories. But the internet has long lost its innocence, and it is important to understand that. The free and easy frontier of thought, expression and community is gone, if it ever existed. And mind you, I am one of the resident optimists!

This forum is social media.
Yes, you could call it that...but it doesn't get special tax breaks from the government, and it's not owned by a puke like Zuckerberg.

I agree; it's a great place to hang out. It may need a private "rumper room" forum for members to let off steam, call for open revolution, tell us their real feelings about Lakelands/Mixture 79, etc.
