Zero doubt it was a de-facto condition of publication.

The entire thing is a bit odd, in fact. Sufficiently apologetic in tone to make me wonder if it's a Trojan Horse of sorts intended to discourage interest in the hobby. Catch the curious with the title, then make 'em realize they'll regret "going there" if they do.

I was thinking the same thing, maybe to get the article published he had to adopt a self effacing tone.

Still, not a bad read for a mainstream media outlet. We pipe smokers don't get much to cheer us from mainstream media so I'll take the win.

I don’t know. People are voyeuristic and getting the inside scoop from someone who supposedly knows, makes the tempting fruit all the more…juicy? Think Anthony Bourdain and his book, Kitchen Confidential. In it, he trashed everything about a banal industry including the rubes (customers) he served, and people ate it up (pun intended). People actually enjoyed reading unsurprising tidbits about an industry most of them probably worked in at one point or another themselves. Why should tobacco use be any different? Hell, I’m here watching all you guys.

This article to my mind fits in the humble brag category of writing. It's like if some guy wrote an article about what a dirty boy he is and how all the ladies kissing him is shameful and keeps him from doing all the other things he should. I don't smoke in public because I'd just look too cool and although I do that cool thing I am not cool which is what the cool kids say which is so weird cause I ain't a cool kid at all. Or at least that's the tone I got out of it.
Actually it's like that fat person in the office that tells you cake is o.k.. They only have a little bit of it.

Just view every photo on this month's WAYS thread and you’ll forget the article entirely as you’ll be browsing eBay, smokingpipes, etc. for your next pipe to think of anything else.
