I have tried quite a few aromatics. It seems that besides couple of them I do not taste anything... Well, I am taste something, but nothing really exciting.

Is that a general rule for aromatics, or am I missing something?

Other than the smell of the room note, I often have the same problem. Generally, the less "aromatic", the more flavor I get, such as Carter Hall or Classic Burley Kake.

Some I like are Stanwell Jubilee, PS Lux Twist Flake, SG Chocolate Fl, CD Autumn Evening and 4noggins Bald Headed Teacher. All of these actually taste like something other than soap.

I, like most people, would recommend Lane 1q. Very cheap to get a sample bag, it tastes good, and isn't just a sweet flavor but and actual pudding like tastiness!
Admittedly lane 1q and capt. black dark are the only 2 aromatics I've tried, but in comparison to burleys, I love them.
I am also very open to hearing lots of suggestions on new aromatics that are big on taste

I tried 1Q. Didn't do much for me. Neither BCA. The only aromatics I liked were 7 Seas Royal, PS Highland Whiskey and Red Sky. I think maybe English Aromatics should do the trick. I tried MB Plumcake and it was OK, I managed to smoke it slowly, which usually does not happen.

I have one aromatic on hand. Scotty's Butternut Burley from P&C. It tastes and smells great. Everything else is flake or English.

After smoking a pipe off and on since the 70's I've yet to find one that even remotely tastes the same way it smells, if any taste at all. I do on occasion smoke a bowl of Bagpipers Dream and other blends that I don't consider as true 'aromatics' (containing some gooey topping) such as Bald Headed Teacher, Frog Morton Cellar, University Flake, etc. Actually, I wish I liked them more considering their room note except for Molte Dolce which I considered abhorrent, smells like Play-Doh and will ghost your pipe.

I'm sure I fried my tastebuds after years of cigarettes but Classic Burley Kake and Bald Headed Teacher as mentioned above are both very good. I get a nice sweetness from both and they smell divine.

Not sure if it's available in your area but Brighams Muskoka Mixture is a very nice aro. I've not seen it in tins but it's available in bulk at some B&M's (Canada only?). I always have some on hand and it's a nice change of pace once in awhile. :puffy:

I'm glad you liked the Red Sky, it's the only aro I constantly buy. I was going to mention Highland Whiskey but I see you listed it amongst the ones you like. You might try Queen Anne's Revenge, Blood Red Moon, and although some have posted how terrible it is I liked Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish. I've tried a lot of aros but there's not to many I've ordered a second time.

Boswells makes some very good aromatics. I keep a couple ounces of their Bear Blend on hand for those occasions when I crave an aromatic blend. Their Berry Cobbler is also good but a little too sweet for my tastes.

Minnesota,
Yeah, your not missing anything. I have never tasted much tobacco flavor in aromatics, and also have not really tasted much of the casing flavor either.

The general rule for aromatics is they're hit or miss lol. I think that could apply to all blends as far as taste goes.
You can draw the flavor out of any blend by keeping your palate moist. Sip on water while having a bowl. Water won't impart any other flavors, so it will give you a solid idea of the flavors of the blend. Another way to get more flavor out of a blend is to "chew the smoke" as GL Pease mentioned in one of the radio episodes. Draw the smoke into your mouth and move your tongue around a bit. Kind of swish it around in your mouth like tasting wine before expelling it. It activates more of your taste buds and brings flavors out better. Retro-haling is another way to get different flavors from a blend. When you expel the smoke through your nostrils it activates the olfactory senses and adds depth to the flavor.
Aromatics just aren't for some people. Same can be said for English, Balkan, Burley, Virginia, VaPers etc.. If you're looking for a blend with a more pleasant room note for smoking around other people I'd suggest Virginia blends. They tend to be less powerful or offensive. Some VaPers can be pleasant, but I think they're more hit or miss than straight VAs. A side note to this, I did get complimented when having a bowl of H&H's Anniversary Kake last night. It was one of those, "Not quite sure what I'm smelling, but it definitely is pleasant.".

As mostly a Virginia smoker, the ones that I enjoy are Erinmore Flake, MacB's Vanilla Cream Flake, McC's Maple Supreme (way better than Autumn Evening IMO), GH&c Coconut Twist, and sometimes a 50/50 mix of Newmisters Blackberry Brandy and Firedance Flake.
This is my short list of aromatics that I sort of like. I really only smoke them in the mornings, so my kids don't smell like an all night poker game when they go to school.

I tried it once and I think it is marvelous. Unfortunately P&C does not ship to Canada. Non other online stores seems to have it in 8oz tins

I know SmokingPipes.Com has it in the 8oz can, but they don't have it in stock right now and I have no idea if they ship to Canada.

I spoke with them and signed up for the email alert, but I us not likely they will have it in stock any time soon. Is that because H&H are more close to P&C then to other retailers?
