The entire post changed directions into a query. Reading the entire post helps. None of the following posts nor his own suggested any snobbery about aromatic smokers which was what I was referring to if you read my post and the one I was replying to.

That's the only hateful reply I've seen in the thread.
Ahhh I see, it changed directions. Silly me.

Exactly... most of the aromatic flavor (in my opinion/experience) comes from the vaporization of the toppings rather than the burning of them.

This is why I think the standard advice of suggesting burley based aromatics for newbs is probably the biggest disservice going. People think it's helpful because (when smoked properly) they are the most mild flavored blends... but it's recommending the easiest blends to smoke too quick and hot to the people most likely to smoke them too quick and hot... hence why I think so many people end up with the "all aromatics are crap" opinion.

Also because there seems to be a certain status associated with hating a cheap plentiful aromatic but loving an austere, expensive, difficult to acquire Perique or DFK blend... almost like our hobby's version of snobbery lol
Agreed. And if you smoke a cheap and plentiful aromatic while using a filter, you’ve got even less pipe smoking cred. 😂 I love them both.

Well this one got a little weird... In truth... My wife does prefer an aro, I do sometimes smoke them because she likes them and that is usually the only time I would reach for them. But every now and then for some reason I just need some Lane Very Cherry. Cant really explain it. But a pipe smoker is a pipe smoker to me and one day when I grow up, I want to be a cap black from the drug store only pipe smoker. I love those types of pipers, though I doubt they sit on forums all day.

Captian black is one of my favorite aros. This thread did derail a bit but we can get this train back on it's track.

Honestly, (most) aromatics are lost on me.

I've tried smoking aro's as slow as possible, to the point of going out, and still the flavor is so minute. Even with retrohaling, still not much. They smell wonderful but that's about it.

I started out with aromatics like many other pipe smokers, but gradually moved onto English/Balkans, Virginia's, and Burleys. Over time I came back to aromatics as a way to break things up. Now days I will smoke aromatics from time to time, usually in the morning with a coffee if I do smoke one. I do find myself smoking aromatics more around Christmas time, though I don't smoke any Christmas blends. LOL

One of my go to tobacco's as of late is a cross-over blend of Lane BCA and Latakia or Lane 1Q and Latakia depending on the mix. I only have 4-5 aromatics in my cabinet to pull from and that works for me. As far as my wife is concerned, she dislikes the smell of all of my tobacco's. LOL

A couple months ago I discovered Wilke's aro Royal Admiral . Wow , it is the smoothest , tastiest , enjoyable smoke I have ever experienced ! Nice room too .

I never thought I would say this , but it actually bumped my stock pile of EGR into 2nd place in my rotation !
I'm a simple man..
When Dave says something that still exists is as good or better than EGR, I buy a pound of it sight-unsmoked... hahaha

Glad you found a new every-day :)
Finding a new (old) favorite tobacco like that.. it's like when I discover a "new" song from the 70's.. some of the more pleasurable surprises of life
