Army mount help

I am thinking of trying to make an army mount or spigot style pipe. Does anybody have any advice or pointers? Or, am I just being overly confident in thinking I can do this with my limited tools and experience?

Disassemble one and do the measuring. Hope your metal working skills are up to the job. Having no idea of the tools/skills you possess I really can't rate your chances for success. Others do it, no reason you can't I suppose.

J Alan designs sells a kit of tools for making military mounts. I can't speak of how it works as I've no plans of making one.
