Well I have had two bowls of the new Carolina Red Flake in two different pipes. First in a Moretti Morta shape 55 with the fold and stuff method after sitting out for about three hours. Second in a Ashton Taylor Dublin fresh from the tin. Sorry to say I did not enjoy either bowl. I found it boring, bland, and one dimensional with nothing to look forward to. I will take the rest of the tin, rub it out and add perique to give it some depth.

I'd recommend letting it sit for a month or two. Mine was the same a year ago but it sure opened up after a bit of time being opened.

Just got my two tins, one for the cellar of course. I've had Panama red by new riders of the purple sage stuck in my head since i ordered it, so listening to NRPS and packing my first bowl now.
Feels appropriate.
Edit after lighting: this stuff is delicious, toasty, sweet, and real easy to smoke. I rubbed it out right outta the tin, packed it loose, and it fired right up. Sure theres not a dozen flavors, but it’s complex enough and very clean. Itll be interesting to try mixing it, but Im happy enough with it on its own

Anyone who has recieved their 2019 version care to elaborate how this year compares? Or for that matter how CRF compares with any of your favorites or signature blends? This will be my first go with CRF and I'm impatiently until Saturday for delivery.

It has more earthiness than I prefer when it comes to a straight Virginia, but it is good enough to my tastes for that to be overlooked. There is a bit of cologne-type spice that peeks out occasionally, but most of the flavor to me stays in the “bready” area. If I had to compare, I’d say it verrrry slightly reminds me of Three Nuns but with less spice and more body. The flavor stays fairly consistent throughout the smoke, which I like, because I like the flavor haha!

Thanks for sharing. "Bready" is good, very good in fact. Now to find the perfect drink to pair with my first bowl...

I picked up 4. That’ll last me a good while. Looking forward to cracking a tin as soon as it shows up as this is an effort to stretch out my McCs reds.

Straight Virginia’s usually burn my tongue. This batch was smooth without being dull. Had a nice edge to it without being harsh or hot
Since McC went tits up, I have been exploring C&Ds Virginias again with fresh eyes. I am impressed with how smooth they are, and yeh most of them taste like they have a little burley-ness to them. But, a few of them are about the best I have explored. This one quickly rose to the top. None of them get bitey, which is probably due to lack of casing and water content. But, without McCs Virginias to compare them to, I have become more of a C&D Virginia fan.

...and a few years ago, I would never have imagined myself saying that. puffy

Smoked some over the weekend, very spicy, grassy with a heavy nic hit. Could swear I tasted Perique.

Smoked great right from the tin, perfect dryness.

The nic hit forced me to put down a couple bowls as I neared the end, and I'm not a novice smoker.
