Are Windcaps Over?

We’ve entered an era when technological goals are to replace knowledge, skill, craft, engineering, and trades with computer generated crap. AI, digital images, programs, 3D printers, laser carvers, robotics… all replacing human jobs from artists, designers, engineers, even the simple dock workers… even self driving cars to replace taxis and deliver.
What jobs will be left?

When we first set computer technology to work making our lives easier, the corporations decided to replace our jobs instead of making things like folding clothes, washing dishes, and dusting.

I think we all marvel at what technology has been made to do, at the detriment of our ability to make money to be able to afford it. I was probably a apart of the last generation that was able to turn a skill into a lively hood.

The future of human is well prophesied in Disney's Wall-E movie.

I wish I could find my source, but I read that windcaps were required in Germany at one time to prevent forest fires. Many old school german pipes (porcelain, tassels, etc.) have them.

This is interesting. I know that many German and Bavarian pipes had caps but I thought it was just a style thing. Not a legal issue.
If anyone has more on this, I would love to hear it.

You can buy detachable windcaps on Amazon. I got one but I found them frustrating because you have to take it off every time you need to relight or tamp, that's far more inconvenient then the wind blowing out the flame. I wouldn't be opposed to buying a pipe with an attached windcap since those seem pretty easy

I just got a Mr. Brog Old Army 21 from my Granddaughter for Christmas. It has an attached windcap and I like it. I have been looking at other brands looking for one and from what I'm finding so far Mr. Brog is the only one that still makes them.

I just got a Mr. Brog Old Army 21 from my Granddaughter for Christmas. It has an attached windcap and I like it. I have been looking at other brands looking for one and from what I'm finding so far Mr. Brog is the only one that still makes them.

I have a similar type of cap. But haven’t made up my mind yet whether it is effective and worth the extra fuss. It seems to lose its grip and slips off every so often. But when out for a stroll along the firth, it is quite breezy, so something has to be tried. At the low price, it is not much of an outlay, and worthy of an attempt.

Yeah I have one of those coming anyday now, I just assumed one of the latches was for opening the “hinge” but I see now it’s not. Smokingpipes has a better deal on them than Amazon…

Still looks doable though, oh well not a big investment.

This is the best way to approach these things. I have a couple that work in a "half-assed" manner. They are better than a sharp stick in the eye, but they are far from perfect.
It's not much of an investment.

Boy I hope these aren't a thing of the past. I am still new to smoking a pipe, and although I don't get in as much practice as I would like, it is frustrating to smoke in the wind here in CO. I actually find myself going between having trouble keeping it lit, and the pipe getting WAY to hot.

Any shared techniques would be appreciated.

@cosmicfolklore mentioned in a previous post (I have not read them all yet) about "tilting the pipe away from the wind". I find tilting the pipe in my mouth, even just a couple of degrees is uncomfortable. It just... feels wierd.
