I also fit the stereotype in many ways but it isn’t all bad. My early 30s nephew says my pipe smoking is one of the things that make me interesting. He means as a person, not specimen. We may be typecast in ways and somewhat justly but at least there is some new interest in pipe smoking.

It's more likely the costume designers are out of touch. That stereotype of elderly people makes sense in pre internet days but now is very outdated. Those style of glasses have actually made a small comeback and pipe smoking is on a steady rise.

All true. My wife's stylish college-aged sister was wearing a pair of glasses kind of like that, and I at first thought it seemed kind of odd, though I thought the same thing when I saw several members Generation Z wearing Birkenstock sandals with socks.

Shakespeare died at 52, which is thought of (optimistically) as mid-life today, and yet his wasn't a tragic early death at the time. Now you have this labelling of teenagers as old as 19 as "children". Ixnay to that! A person stops being a child upon becoming able to have children of his own—reaching sexual maturity. Even if they are societally incapable of marrying and starting to produce offspring, they're no longer children.

But, well, if we tell them they're children we shouldn't wonder they behave as such.
