Greetings people,

I have a question. Recently I have been looking to get myself a custom made pipe. Nothing fancy but something that resembles what I want. Unfortunatly, I contacted Askwith and he can’t make a filtered pipe. Similarly Jim Craig (Ashton) can only do 9mm, which is ok but I wanted something that has a smaller shank and overall sleek look, not a very thick and heavy pipe. Upon looking around, I have not found any pipe carvers/makers that will do a filtered 6mm pipe.

Please, if you know any, do not hesistate to tell me who they are and give me their best concact information.

I am new to this and have no Idea where to find pipe makers.

I don't know, but if we're talking a commission I can't see why the carver can't easily produce a pipe taking a filter.
I agree, but I am no carver. Askwith has stated that getting into specifics and buying the tools and equipment would be too much time and effort.

I guess there is some modifications to the stem, tenon, and shank that a carver won’t be too confident in making, though I am not sure.

Just an FYI: If you can find someone to make a pipe w/the 9mm, then you can use an adapter to 6mm. I recently purchased a Savinelli Trevi that had a 9mm to 6mm configuration.

See, I wanted pipes with a smaller shanks. Some 9mm pipes have a thicker shank to accommodate the 9mm, thus it increases the weight + dimensions sometimes. Some pipes like the dunhill group 1 or 2 inevitably have a smaller shank. And some of them look like they can fit a 6mm filter. As an easier example, look at bing’s favorite by Savinelli. The shank is small, but small enough to accommodate a 6mm filter only.

I would love to have some of those pipes without being forced to smoke them without a filter or to never be able to smoke those pipes.

What is it you are looking for specifically? I mentioned this in a thread maybe 2 months ago, I've been making 6mm pipes mostly for myself but recently now looking to make some to send out to people in return for feedback. You keep the pipe but I really need some constructive feedback in return so there's a little bit of commitment requested back on your part.

I'm pretty much a 6mm filter smoker exclusively and the lack of 6mm filter pipes in shapes, draws and styles I wanted is what led me to get into making my own about 2 years ago.

PM me if you want. I have a couple currently in progress, a few of which I'm going to be offering to some people, but I'm open to thinking about a shape I haven't done yet if you want something specific.

There also Simon Bosko in the UK who makes filtered pipes and regularly has them for sale. You can find him on the channel London Calling Simon. I think his email is LCSBriars.com but not totally sure of that.

The 9 mm filters are popular in Europe, so I would think the carvers there would have filter pipes on their menu.

I've made filtered pipes a handful of times upon request. It's never "on spec" because the vast majority of the buying market for artisan pipes wants unfiltered pipes with tight internal tolerances. It's kind of like a P-lip stem - I can do it, but it's extra work, and it reduces the number of people who might purchase the pipe, so I never do it. All a maker has to do is design the pipe around the filter, make sure the stem can accommodate the 6 or 9 mm drilling preferred, and leave appropriate room in the stummel. No big deal for ordinary shapes.

You'd be surprised (or maybe not) at the looks and responses one gets when asking makers for a filtered pipe. I left my last pipe show earlier than I would have because I was tired of being suggested from carver tables that maybe I should change my smoking techniques instead of asking for filter pipes. My singular experience is a lot of makers don't seem to want to be bothered with changing their process.

Strangely, I have been shunned by requesting a 6mm pipe completly. Jim Craig (Ashton) straight up told me he doesn’t do 6mm and only 9mm. I haven’t talked to him further about it, but it is strange that upon request it still would be a conversation ender by asking a filtered pipe. Some pipes have smaller shanks, such as group 1 or 2 Dunhill's and I could see it fitting a 6mm, and who is better than Ashton to replicate classic english pipes but for some reason 6mm is not something doable even upon requesting them.

Pretty sure Moretti would be a good bet (Marco does sometimes make 9mm for sure).

I guess if you're just running pipes out at whatever spec you run pipes out at it's a bigger deal. If you are doing one-off custom stuff, I can't see how it's that much of a pain to drill a hole 5/16" instead of 5/32". Probably takes me 10 extrad minutes all told to make a filter pipe. I can understand the snobby side though, I mean, I get some guys like filters, but what happened to me when I started smoking good quality unfiltered pipes, built well, like Castellos, is I never wanted to see a filter again. So I think there's a little bit of "Oh well go buy a savinelli then." attitude in carving circles. I think it's difficult for us non-filter users to see filtered pipes as offering anywhere near as good an experience - "A filter? Oh god, why not smoke a cigarette then?" you know? And it's wrong, I get what filters do and why some guys prefer them. And it's like any other choice in pipes, you like a big pipe, I like a small pipe, doesn't make one of us wrong.
