Just curious if anyone here has a list of least favorite pipes- are there any particular pipes styles or brands that you dislike?

Someone mentioned that some of the pipes imported from China are of poor quality-are they of a certain maker?

Im just asking so i know which pipes I should avoid..

Good question. I'm a newB and would like to know what pipes to tread lightly with as well. From what i've gathered in my limited time as a pipe smoker, and this forum, no pipe is a bad pipe if the person smoking it likes it :D . Though I understand the concept of that thought process, and appreciate it :) , I would like some non-"politically correct" and biased opinions ... if there are any :D
All in good fun right? :)

Personally I'm not too into the look of the meerschaums that are shaped like animals or people etc. Good sculpting on them, I just don't want my pipe to look like a lion's head or something. I wasn't too fond of freehands at first either, but over time they've grown on me. I haven't heard too much of people branding a particular maker as bad and not worth buying. I have heard a lot of comments though on some pipes that people felt they needed to tweek a little to lessen the gargling or people have taken filters out to better taste the tobacco and such.

The chinese ones are Haojne and they suck! They are plastic with a metal tobacco chamber. Sure some look really cool, but smoking out of plastic is kinda scary and in my youth I smoked out of some strange things. Now my wife did buy me one for Valetines day and I cherish it because she got it for me. It also will never leave the box and touch my tobacco. On a side note since then I taught here what to and not to buy and she did buy me a nice estate Sav Lolita.

I agree about the meerschaums. They can be nice works of art, but i'm not sure if I want my pipe looking like an elephant's head.

Ditto unclearthur's Brylon pick. Also, not too crazy about the gimmicky looking Falcons, or any pipes with the metal stems, and further, metal stingers. The latter bothering me only because of the PITA factor in cleaning. Otherwise the stinger pipes are OK. I think gourd calabashes are great smokers -- in fact hard to beat, but they're not terribly convenient. It's ironic that such a pipe, which can take a real beating without rest, remains among the least used pipes on the rack.

I don't like pipes with sharp edges.Since I wrap my thumb around the back of a pipe when I hold it I especially don't like the shank on bulldogs. For me they aren't comfortable to hold.

For me it's P-lip pipes. I'm a clincher/muncher and haven't any real success with them.

As for shape and styles... I like them all for what they are, but obtain pipes that suit my style criteria at the time, and will pass my "personal" quality inspection.

I have nothing for clay and meerschaum pipes. I don't like to purchase a pipe on-line that looks really nice, struck a good interest, and then when it gets here I find plastic parts. I do like metal pipes of various types, but I hate that it's hard to come by spare bowls for them.

I'm not a big fan of the whole "bridge" style of pipe. It just looks like somebody didn't finish their pipe to me.

I hate Brylon I'd recommend that everybody avoid like the plague.

I gotta defend clay pipes. I love to char a small piece of coal and put it on top of the stuffed pipe, tamp lightly, and smoke.
I've seen some Chinese pipes wooden outside but with a plastic tobacco chamber inside. What should I say? Common sense prevails! Didn't even check for the price.

I would venture to say that anyone who does not like corncob pipes has never given them a fair chance and/or smoked from one. Not liking the LOOK is understandable, but they smoke amazing if you get a good one.
I also don't like a lot of the Meerschaum carvings of faces and animals and stuff. There is a lot of skill in some of them, but they tend to have a special kind of tackyness that makes me think of flea market knick-knacks.
I also don't like overly large bowls. I'd rather reload a bowl three times then have a bowl so large I have to choose between spending 2 hours smoking or wasting good tobacco.

I don't really dislike any pipes, however there are many I find interesting but don't have any interest in smoking.
I prefer briar and will on occasion smoke a cob or an applewood, which a friend of mine made for me.
This would be a pretty boring hobby if we all liked the same pipes and tobacco.

I have purchased a fair number of E-bay pipes and a fair number of "store Bought" new pipes... and although I have received some really good smokers from E-bay.. I have also received some that smoke so hot you can barley hold them.... I have gotten a couple of new from the shop pipes that tended to smoke hot. .but not near the number of those from e-bay .... I think often you are buying another mans problem with Estate pipes...
So I no longer like estate pipes... but prefer to "roll my dice" on new ones...
