But you might pick up a pack of tiny mesh disks that would solve your bits and pieces up the airway
So does loading the longer pieces of tobacco first.

I agree 100% with the comments about English in a cob. Briars for English, and cobs for Carter Hall, the occasional Virginia, and the occasional aromatic.

I have to put on my fussy hat to say it, but a good English blend resonates better for me in briar, and if it has more than three tobaccos, best if it is a broad bowl briar. Cobs happily accept most blends and will do an okay job with English blends, but you're not going to get the full symphony orchestra on a given English or Balkan blend. On the other had, for some of the great down home blends, better go to a cob; a cob really shows you dimensions in those blends you won't ring out of your briars. Sometimes you just need to go with a cob or briar for your own reasons, with whatever blend, and I'd say, do so.

What I'm about to write is essentially the opposite of "blends you won't smoke in a cob"... On the occasion that I smoke an aromatic, I ONLY use a cob. They are absorbent, smoke cool, and allow you to taste the unique flavors of the aromatic tobacco. I don't even know why anyone would smoke an aromatic in a briar given how well a cob accomplishes the task (no hate on those who like aromatics in briars, we all have our preferences).

I just received my first cob and was planning to dedicate it to aromatics. Your comment lawdawg supports my thoughts about this.

I haven't quite gotten to the point of using just one pip for this, or one pipe for that. Still discovering what works for me, so I've just been experimenting. Tried some flake in one of my cobs and once it neared the end, that's when I got the ash, but this is the general effect in all of my cobs with the exception being my Charles Towne Cobbler. I've figured it's because of the other pipes are have the filter stems and I don't typically smoke with filters at all. The Cobbler isn't equipped for a filter, so the draft hole in the stem is not as open. I love my cobs, and I smoke almost anything in them, just hate getting ashes in my mouth or that feeling as though I have wasted some of my better tobacco in them that's near the bottom. Lots of good suggestions guys, and the next time I get the chance, I'll try out some of them. For now, I shall return to my current bowl of Black Frigate in the Cobbler....I need more of these. It's turned into my favorite pipe to smoke.

I used to have a lot of fun with cobs back in the 1-Q days but, I rarely smoke them anymore. I just seem to gain a fuller taste with va's and va-pers thru a well maintained briar.

I also, do not smoke English blends in a cob. Nor any Oriental or Balkan. I use my cobs for aromatics and burley blends. Just my preference. I have no science or formal observation to back up my preferences. It's just what I have arrived at.

Cobs 90% of the time, I enjoy every blend in them.
A Forever Stem would also fix your issue with ash, as it tightens the draw down to a normal airway.

It's not that specific or precise for me. If I have something I'm not in love with in my cobs, I'll just try a briar and see what happens. It is surprising sometimes how it can make that blend quite good.
As to the wood and the extra space in the bottom. Anymore I just wait till the wood chars a bit, spit into the bottom of the bowl, and sprinkle some ashes in. Let it sit for a couple days. Done. It ain't rocket surgery.

Cobs are so adaptable, I feel like I'm chasing shadows here. With English blends, I think those with burley probably come up in cobs best. Something about cobs and burley just flows. I'm not as well versed in Virginias, but I suspect some Virginias shine in cobs as well. To look at it differently, if I only smoked cobs, I don't think I'd miss too much.

I honestly hope this post gets glances over cause some of y’all would think I’m crazy, but ..........
I won’t even smoke C&D ‘s Dreams of Kadath in anything - including cobs.
There is something about that blend that just tastes too artificial, I have no clue, but I can still taste it in one Cob I tried it in. The fake sweetness taste is there. Ugh.
Anyway, carry on.
