I'm getting ready to apply mud on a pipe but have no idea what to do do I scrape away the burnt wood out or just apply the mud over the entire bowl evenly?
Thanks in advance.
mike.

Pipe mud is a mixture of cigar ash and water (or sometimes honey) which is put into a spot in the chamber that's beginning to burn out. It's allowed to dry for a while, and then it's smoked over so it will harden an protect the spot, preventing it from burning all the way through.

When I've done this, I just apply it to the burnt spot without removing any of the material. The rough surface gives the mud more of a purchase to grab onto, and stays in the area well.

I apply the mud to many of my pipes to fine tune the draft hole to the bottom of the bowl. I remove any "loose" material, and then apply it as is. I use woodstove ash and add about 1/4 activated charcoal (by volume) and one drop of honey to my mix. It hardens after the first or second smoke. Just be careful removing the dottle after the first smoke.
