Though I have a desktop PC most of my internet time is spent on my Kindle Fire. I'm looking into possibly buying an iPad basic (£329) or iPad Air (£549) but am struggling to see what benefits either have over my trusty Kindle.

Pretty much all I do is browse the net, read news articles and send e-mails, nothing too fancy.

Thoughts anyone?

Regards,

Jay.?

If that is all that you do, there's really no reason, unless you find the speed of the Kindle to be annoyingly slow. I just found that flipping between things and the time it takes on a Kindle to be worth the upgrade to an iPad. I even prefer reading books on Kindle app in the iPad over using the Kindle. Plus, those batteries on the Kindle seem to be set to self-destruct after a year. My iPad has lasted me a lot longer than that.

But, once you get it, you may find the vast world of apps and uses to be intriguing. Things you didn't plan on doing, m ight just start to appeal to you.

Save your money. Your Kindle is doing everything you need.

I use an 11 inch iPad Pro, BUT I essentially run my business with it.

I have a kindle in my office that I stream movies on, read books and light surfing. It’s an older version and it just keeps humming along.

I have a stack of dead kindles, because the batteries stop recharging after a year or so. I wonder what I might be doing wrong. I use the charger that it comes with, and I wait till it is almost completely dead and then always recharge to 100%.

Mine is on my desk on a little stand and it stays plugged in. It only comes off the stand occasionally

Michael, I had that problem too once and believe it or not it was solved by simply replacing the white cable that runs from the charger to the device. That was a tip I picked up on the web. I had my doubts but it worked 100%.

I killed a couple cellphone batteries in less than a year doing that. I was told new type batteries used in devices prefer to stay in the 40-80% range and not to kill them completely, and my current phone has lasted almost 3 years without the battery crapping out on it.

I carry a flip phone at work and it gets charged about every 3 days. My wife finally brought me into this century and made me carry her old I phone I only charge it about every 2 or 3 days. What the hell am I doing

I have always loved the intuitive interface, natural pictures and colors of the screens of my Apple devices and still using my first iMac from 2008 and my almost as old iPad mini 1st gen (now mostly for reading ebooks) . I am also still happy with my iPhone 7. My wife’s new basic model iPad is even nicer though...The physical home button on my old iPad does not work anymore but then Apple made it possible that you can have a fully functional home button on the screen instead. Smart! I once tried a cheaper tablet but returned it. Quality pays and is more sustainable in the long run. When/if finances allow, I know I will stay with Apple for my private devices. I also have some OK PCs and Android phones but those are only used for work.

I have a Lenovo Chromebook 2 in 1 laptop. Best of all worlds for only $280 new. 11.6" HD touchscreen. 64G solid state drive. USB, USB-C, HDMI, headphone/microphone jack.

Chrome OS is ideal for what your stated uses are.

I am, however, thinking of replacing Chrome OS with Linux.

We’re an Apple family... iMac, iPhones, iPads, iPods, AirPods, etc. Not sure how it happed, but it did. That’s being said, if something I like better came alone I’d jump ship. There are numerous Kindle vs. iPad articles. Compare the features that are important to you. If you decide on an iPad, then I suggest getting the 12.9” Pro... nice size, display, audio, battery life, etc.

I’ve been a fan since the Apple Macintosh ‘84 and while I have an iPad 2 I had the occasion to play with my wife’s Kindle Fire. The iPad outclasses it in every way, but it does just fine for what my wife uses it for; streaming movies and playing candy crush.

I've used an iPad as part of a job, and I own a Kindle Fire 10 HD. So, in my experience, the major advantage to Apple products is that they just work so well and intuitively. They're great! Are they worth the price premium? Generally no, not for me.

My Kindle does everything I need it to, and after following an easy web tutorial, I have it running Google Play and any app from the Google Play store. The ability to do that is what convinced me to give the Kindle a try, and alleviates one of the Kindle's disadvantages. Some of its advantages are its very low price, they work well, and the battery life is nice and long. I've mainly been quite impressed with it, though.
