I can't see black irish twist making a good chew, but to each their own. I chew brown bogie but it took a few tries to get the technique down, I more make a thick coin and kind of use it as a tobacco lozenge almost, you kind of let the spit moisten it up good and then you can suck a bit of juice out, I just swallow it mostly. If you actually chew it you'll get a nic hit that will turn you sick, I pretty much slowly suck it while it's between my lip and gums, then after maybe an hour I'll actually bite into it and then I need to spit. I find once it's dry it's pretty hard to rub out, it's more like chunks, but I found it to burn really nice and had a great flavor. As soon as I rehydrated it the slightest it was gross. I also smoked bowls of it back to back my first time and I wasn't a nic heavyweight at all. Some of the pieces of it once it's dry are almost like oily looking charcoal. I guess you could cube cut it and then let it dry. I do find cube cutting works the best for preparing ropes and it really doesn't take much longer than preparing flake tobacco. I'll also rub out coins I've cut, but the key is let it dry until it's crispy. The brown ropes are different, those I like moist.

My wife said it looks like my dog got into the tobacco and left me a present lol!
lol. I've got some Sweet Rum Twist coiled up in a jar. I was showing it to the lady friend (because I'm so very proud of my tobacco and such I feel I have to show it off) and she said something similar.
Me: Hey look at this!

Ladyfriend: What the hell? Is that a freaking turd? In a jar?!?

Me: No, it's a...

Ladyfriend: It looks like a freaking turd!

Me: No. It's not a...

Ladyfriend: What are you doing with a turd? In a jar?

Me: It's tobacco!!!

Ladyfriend: Doesn't look like your other tobacco.

Me: It's rope tobacco. They spin it into a rope like they used to way back in the day. It's like... historical tobacco.
She raises an eyebrow...
Me: Here (I open the jar and take a whiff because I think the stuff smells lovely... and then put the jar under her nose)smell! (at which point she smacks the jar away and shoves me away.) It smells nice!

Ladyfriend: What the hell? Get that out of my face!

Me: But you like the smell of Latakia! I thought you'd like this too!

Ladyfriend: Latakia is tobacco. That's a freaking turd in a jar!

Me: No seriously! Trust me. I think you'll like it... smell! (Finally she takes a sniff... puts a hand out... gags a little)

Ladyfriend: Jesuschrist it's a freaking turd!!!

Me: No really...

Ladyfriend: It's a historical freaking turd!!!
By the way... she hits hard.

It is definitely an acquired taste. I love Brown Bogie but need to be in the right mood for the black irish x.

I wanted to try this myself but got muddled up when making my order and asked for Brown Bogie instead. Wow, that is one powerful smoke!
Hopefully next time I will get my order right as I feel the black will be more to my liking than the brown. Nothing unpleasant in the brown, it's just a little on the strong side for me. I did cut some with some Curly Cut (a pretty boring blend) and that worked better for my delicate palate :puffy:
Regards,
Jay.

Sporting of you to give it a go. I did okay with the black rope. I didn't move on to the brown. I've enjoyed some other full-strength blends like Tambolaka and good old C&D Big 'n Burley and Dark Burley, among others. 'Trouble is, if you stick with high nic blends, you adjust, and pretty soon it's all mild to you. I rotate with medium and some mild blends. I've even gone back to some aromatics. I like a bit of a nic buzz from time to time, but I don't want that as a centerpiece of pipe smoking. For me, anyway, that would just be a mistake.

Mmmmm..... steak! I never thought these stories were true until it happened to me...
So I cut two coins and let them dry all day. Very meaty. Strange yet satisfying.

Now it's revealed itself to you! Yeah that was my first experience, it was crispy dry from a box pass, I had 2 bowls back to back it was so delicious, then the last bowl a few days later I'd rehydrated it a bit and I found it gross, like a motor oil taste. I didn't find the nicotine to be to heavy. A great rope that's not going to knock you out either is coconut twist. It's amazing.

I still can't seem to keep the darn thing lit very long. It is difficult and a bit discouraging. If I were to compare it to playing a guitar it would be a fender. You can't fake it on a fender. More directly it would be a telecaster where you have to beat it into submission and coax every note.
I wish it would behave itself and allow an easy smoke!

It's good tobacco just have to be prepared for it.
Like put on a white pair of underware and a pair of cowboy boots and nothing more. Harvest your late tomatoes in the back yard garden while smoking a bowl and you are almost guaranteed to talk to a neighbor cougar lady asking about your Brussle sprouts.
True story bro.

Try rubbing it out and then letting it dry and then tamp it down after a few lights and you should get it going. I do find when I'm smoking rope it's kind of a saving grace that it keeps going out, as when I get a bowl going that doesn't stop burning pretty soon you find yourself with the niccups. I found black irish x dry was like charcoal almost, greasy looking charcoal.

Ok, I let it dry and then crumbled it up. It was like chunks of coal. I will try it your way Andy.

There are many things to admire in the attitudes and lifestyles of the great British working classes. However, you can admire Michaleen without drowning yourself in whisky or smoking pigtail. It's quite alright to be more evolved!

randelli, I would not rub those coins out. Instead, cut a couple of thin coins, let them dry a bit, just enough so that they will burn, then load them flat into the MIDDLE of the bowl, with a little ribbon cut both above and below to let them breathe. The ribbon above will help get it burning and the ribbon below will allow for the air flow around the coins to let them burn properly.

If you decide to branch out to the flavored ropes don't expect an aromatic quality to them. I had my first bowl of maple twist yesterday and it was like a strong cigar, no maple that I could pick up. Nice tobacco but quite similar to HBB and Black XX.
