The ritual is part of the realxing experience. You can't rush through it, it's a slow process by nature. You can do most anything with a cigarette or cigar hanging out of your yap, but it's not so easy with a pipe. It's much more than just getting a nicotine hit. Smoking a pipe requires commitment, which brings its unique reward.
Amen.

And as several people have said, there's a joy to slowing down. :puffy:

I use a straight razor to shave
Haha, me too, also Tobac shaving soap.
I love all the posts, and i wasnt saying that we are literally crazy, just a tongue in cheek post. I think us pipe men and women are a different breed compared to the rest of modern society, i love being able to slow down and enjoy what i do.
And slowing down itself is a dying art, let alone pipe smoking.
wasnt trying to offend, just bring a different perspective. happy smoking

I larned to shave with a straight razor. Got decent at it, too. Still use the mug and soap vs. shaving gel, but went back to a modern razor. Too lazy to keep up with the honing and stropping and trying not to cut my ears off and all.

If I thought about how crazy I am I wouldn't have time to smoke.

I think its the rest of the world that needs to slow down too.

The doctors took away having a social beer with friends en lieu of muscle relaxers. But, with a pipe I no longer hold a grudge. Pipes teach me more about myself than I would have ever imagined.

pipe smoking is by no mean similar to smoking cigarettes or even cigars. one big difference is that you through away what is left of your cigar or cigarette after finishing... in pipe you grow a sort of emotional attachment to your pipes... it almost becomes a part of yourself and your memories.. you blow life into it as you smoke it frequently.. so ... a pipe can be your friend, but cigars and cigarettes die too young

Ha, ha, good point, but I also love the ritual of preparing. It's such an event for me. Also, as of late, it's either really good luck or good tobacco preparing, because on my walks with my pipe, I only light once, maybe twice over 40 minutes. Very enjoyable.

The rituals and years of experience that lie behind those rituals slow us down a bit and provide skilled focus in a world racing toward the countless "essentials" that make up a hoped for peace that never seems to arrive. In my precious pipes, I find a contentment the world will never know. Trust me, gentlemen; we are not the crazy ones.

I've enjoyed both pipes and cigars, and always, always, go back to my pipes. My pipe allows me to focus on the moment in a way few other activities do. It's the total package.

I never really thought about it the way many of you are putting it, but I like doing what I can from scratch/taking the methodical way instead of the instant way. I wonder if that's a common trait amongst people who smoke pipes. When I cook, I do it from scratch. When I drink, it's an evening long event and I only get 3 or 4 in that amount of time. I haven't moved up to a straight razor yet for fear of killing myself but I do have the badger hair brush/safety razor combo going on (although of late I've been sporting a pretty nasty beard :). This has been a very enlightening thread indeed.

I think a majority of the cigar smokers do feel that way. I watched them looking at us the other evening. To them, it just doesn't make sense. I love all the mechanics of smoking and caring for a pipe
Would I suck on a wet tobacco leaf? Come on, I'm not an animal! Disgusting.
