Found a really nice pipe/tobacco store in my town today... so many nice tobaccos.... The guy had about 300 pipes!!!! many different brands... from GBD, Sav, Peterson, Brebbia, comoys, chartans.... ... and many more....anyway, he had some brand new... LANE Pipes... made in Italy... Park... Lane etc... he said they haven't made pipes in about 10 years... saw a really nice poker... been in his store forever... I would have bought it in a heartbeat because it felt so right, but it was $75 and not sure if that is a good, bad or ugly deal... so I started a little research online and didn't find much... all I remember being stamped on the pipe was: Lane and Park and made in italy...

In my experiance, pipes in pipe stores go for a lot more than they would on Ebay, your paying for the privalege to be able to hold it in your hands before you buy it, which is valuable. The shelf space you are paying for is real estate that they must make up for in some way. If I found a new pipe that felt perfect and it was $75, I'd pay full price. I once found "the perfect pipe" for $65, but it had a draft hole not even close to the center. That pretty much was the nail in the coffin for me and the fact I didn't have that kind of money to spend on a pipe.

Yeah, I don't mind paying a little extra to help the local entrepreneur... he's been around for almost 30 years...
I just don't want to pay $75 and see the same pipe sell somewhere for $15 ;-)

Lane Ltd. bought Charatan in 1960. The stem looks like it could be a Charatan. It also appears that Ben Wade made pipes for Lane as well at one point. IMO, the price point you quote may be OK if it is either one.

Yeah... thanks... I have done just enough research to learn that "lane" is all over the place... many projects with various other companies...

These are made in italy which is one of the better clues... at it's 10+ years old...

All Lane Pipes are handcrafted briar pipes made in the 80's & 90's by the old Mastercraft Plant.
Copied that from the Pipe Tobacco Place website. The pipes they show could very well have been made in the 80's &90's,but they were not made by Mastercraft. Mastercraft did not make pipes. They did buy pipes from about half of the worlds pipe making companies though, both import and domestic. The pipes shown on that page were all made by GRABOW. Lane Limited owned Grabow for a while back then.
Lasttango--the pipe in your picture is NOT a Grabow made pipe BTW.

Take a look at this for more info on Lane/Charatan.
That pipe is a beauty and I am with Roth on this one.

Slightly off-topic perhaps, but Lane Ltd. also carried (or carries?) the "Captain Black" series. Who made them I don't know, neither if they're still on the market or not. The point could be that, whatever the markings on your pipe, you might be surprised to learn its true origin. This particular pipe looks like a nice shape and appears well-made. Hey, even your brandnew Stanwell is "Made in Italy" nowadays .
