I have been hanging around the UK smokers forum and I was reading a thread about what was described as one of the most awful tobaccos. They say it it's a Dutch brand by the name Clan. I have never heard of it and was curious to see if anyone here has tried it.

Had me wondering there for a minute. From the title, I thought this might be some kinda white robe wearing clan you were talking bout! That could have gotten awkward.

Clan has not been available in the States for years, AFAIK. I remember seeing it when I started smoking, but never tried it. There were a lot of Dutch tobaccos easily available then - Amphora, Sail, Troost, and Flying Dutchman, just to name a few.

A few people said it was like flying Dutchman but stronger. Some people s said that it bit like a badger. *shiver* I'm sure there are a few tobaccos that are pretty harsh, any cautionary tales to help a newb avoid such woes?

I was flying international out of LAX last week and saw it in the Duty Free. Selling $20 for 5 pouches. Pretty cheap. But, I did a quick search for reviews, and seeing how bad the reviews were on it, I passed.

When I smoked it more than 30 years ago, it bit me like a rabid skunk, and sort of tasted like one, too.

I've never smoked it, but they had some pretty classic "Smoke Clan, get laid." type of ads...

I think those ads must have made people forget the taste and smell of the stuff. It doesn't sound good.

Yes. It is widely on sale in the UK. It comes in a tartan packet (hence "Clan"). It is a poor excuse for a pipe tobacco, but it has a uniquely distinctive floral room note. Hence mostly smoked by attention-seekers IMO! Best avoided.

Oh, you said clan . . . Not "the Clan".
I was nervously looking over my shoulder.
