I have been hanging around the UK smokers forum and I was reading a thread about what was described as one of the most awful tobaccos. They say it it's a Dutch brand by the name Clan. I have never heard of it and was curious to see if anyone here has tried it.
You know the company that makes it? Or if its even for sale in America? I have never heard of it. Although I do try to smoke the best baccy, not the worse.
Had me wondering there for a minute. From the title, I thought this might be some kinda white robe wearing clan you were talking bout! That could have gotten awkward.
Yup, from origin it is a Dutch made tobacco. Now it is made by STG. Yeaaaars ago it was THE Dutch tobacco together with Amphora. Every older Dutch pipe smoker I know has smoked it. So I guess at one time it was pretty good. I smoked it once but did not finish the pouch.. Not much of a taste and it bit me ferociously.. Clan has not been available in the States for years, AFAIK. I remember seeing it when I started smoking, but never tried it. There were a lot of Dutch tobaccos easily available then - Amphora, Sail, Troost, and Flying Dutchman, just to name a few.
A few people said it was like flying Dutchman but stronger. Some people s said that it bit like a badger. *shiver* I'm sure there are a few tobaccos that are pretty harsh, any cautionary tales to help a newb avoid such woes?
I was flying international out of LAX last week and saw it in the Duty Free. Selling $20 for 5 pouches. Pretty cheap. But, I did a quick search for reviews, and seeing how bad the reviews were on it, I passed.
Yes. It is widely on sale in the UK. It comes in a tartan packet (hence "Clan"). It is a poor excuse for a pipe tobacco, but it has a uniquely distinctive floral room note. Hence mostly smoked by attention-seekers IMO! Best avoided.
