Has anyone had any experience with Austrian pipe maker Christian Ruetz? I am not looking to buy one right now, but I saw his pipes and started wondering if they smoke well, since I have never heard of them.

Cheers

I realize this thread is four years old, but I thought I'd respond because I'm a little surprised no one else has.

I bought a pipe from Christian at this year's Chicago show. It's one of his signature "Broken Gaia" shapes. In fact, I saw thousands of pipes at the show and it was the only one that i decided to buy. Not that there weren't other great pipes, but it was the only one that met my pretty high standards that I could actually (though just barely) afford.

It can be hard to tell the real quality of the actual work these days from pictures on Instagram, but I was interested in what I had seen online and was excited to see his work in person to judge for myself whether the craftsmanship matched the artistry. In his case, I am happy to report that it does.

Some people can make a pipe that smokes well but have no sense of artistry, proportion, tradition, or finishing techniques. More frustratingly, some people have all those things but can't drill three holes so they line up dead center. And then, sometimes, far less often, you get lucky and find someone who can do it all well. Christian is one of those.

I love my Ruetz pipe. It's beautiful. It's drilled perfectly. It's one of the best smokers I have.

So, yeah, bottom line, if anyone else is wondering if he's the real deal, I do believe that he is.

Here's the one I bought.

Ruetz pipes are in high demand. I paid a deposit and was on his waiting list for quite a while and when I finally received a message that I was next up, I decided my design tastes had changed and voluntary forfeited my deposit. But he does make great pipes.
