I like the Country Squire and Jon David. I have even stopped in three or four times when I've been to Mississippi. There have only been a couple of his blends I didn't like.

What gets me is people creating blends based on the Lord of the Rings and they have no clue about what the characters really smoked because Tolkien never gave flavor profiles for the tobacco. I've always felt that if you want to smoke something related to the Lord of the Rings, then you would have to smoke Capstan Blue because that is what Tolkien smoked. At least that's what I've been told.

Some people dig the LOTR stuff... apparently alot of pipe smokers do. So it goes, whatever gets you through a day. I like Frog Morton...and I do not reflect on hobbits and wizards when I enjoy it.

On the other hand I do recall a blend called de-good-shit or something like that. Didn't care for that name too much....just a bit unnecessary base to me. I'm no nanny, and I do cuss, just didn't want the cussing (sorta kinda) on my tobacco tin.

Now, I would have a problem with a blend called frog (or smeagle) droppings....

It can get out of hand, I'm sure there are plenty of LOTR LARPers that pick up a churchwarden and a sack of something named after the franchise that don't actually even enjoy smoking... but the phenomenon has probably brought in more new pipe smokers than anything else in many years, and since the newer generation doesn't have memories of their fathers and uncles smoking pipes, and weren't encouraged to pick up a pipe in college like previous generations, I think it's a much needed thing to keep the hobby from going extinct. Anything that generates new interest in pipe smoking and shows it in a positive light is a good thing. I also think many companies are trying to capitalize on the departure of McC by attempting to fill the void left by Frog Morton. From what I can tell, all of the Country Squire's Middle Earth Series are at least very good quality blends and not just mixtures of cheap mass produced bulk aros with a dab of Latakia.

No I’m just sick of this lord of the rings shit. We are adult men.
Look man, I'm a grown-ass man that lifts heavy shit all day in a sweaty fuck-mess and I also think that ANY cash grab is total shite, but I'm a huge LTR fan, so... some people just like other things than you do. Do I romanticize pipe smoking because of Tolkien literature? A bunch of grown-ass men with fatter nuts than you have
did well before us, I know that to be fact.

Funniest thing about this thread: One person actually kind of answered my question. I'm by no means an aro guy, but I'm pretty jazzed on anything that Jon puts out and I didn't get to try it. Jeeeeezzz

I should also mention that I had Jon David make a private blend for me and it’s sort of a cross between a light English and a light aromatic. I need to order some more.

Yeah, I mean I can see where people wouldn't appreciate the movies over classic literary masterpieces, but I'm also a huge fan of the Hitchhiker's guide and personally loved the movie. Most fans ripped it apart. I can also see why. I mean the damn thing was co produced by Douglas Adams himself!

It’s just impossible to fit a book into a movie IMO. It’s more like a product of the book.

That's generally true of course.

The best thing a movie can achieve is to capture the spirit of the book...and stay as true to the story as possible. I thought the LOTR movies did a pretty good job of that, as far as it goes.

But I only saw part 1 of The Hobbit...had no desire to see more...not nearly as well done as the LOTR films were IMO.

Wayyyy too much CGI action in my opinion. You can't beat classic camera tricks and just plain ole cinematography talent.
