@mso489: Thanks for this thread, and sorry for the necro.
Recently, I haven't been enjoying pipe smoking as much as I thought I would. Again.
I threw in the towel and started smoking cigarettes again in spite of my growing stash of "premium" tobaccos and ever-increasing pipe count.
I'm not sure how I stumbled upon this thread last week, but I was intrigued and ordered a few ounces of Granger from 4noggins. It arrived today.
YES PLEASE!
I finally found my everyday smoke!
Wish the dog was a cat, though.

charlie', what a surprise to see this thread revived. I thought it was a new one. I hope Granger rescues you from the nails. That old Granger pointer is an icon of my childhood. I grew up with an amazing water dog, smaller than the pointer and long-haired, George was all-black, all muscle, zero fat, and had eyes that glowed like coals. What a guy. Glad you like that good old Kentucky rough cut burley. It's its own thing. Surprisingly, I also have a huge affinity for cats. My sister calls me a cat magnet. Cats like me that don't l like anyone else. As a houseguest, the resident cat comes and sleeps on me. I was brought up as a toddler partly by a cat, and she taught me my cat manners well ... she thought I was an extremely large, slow, dim-witted kitten.

40-50 years ago I liked the OTC's. Granger wasn't one of them but Edgeworth RR was a good one.
Half and Half was a fav as well. I still miss the old Revelation too.

I didn't care much for the Pinkerton version of Granger, but I do like the current Lane version. They improved the blend.

Do they still sell the little boxes of Granger...no, right? Why was "mild" such a huge selling point for pipe tobacco back in the day?

I have a tub of Granger I've been working through for about two years. Its not terrible, very high on straight burley flavor, doesn't seem to be topped at all. Not bad, but I prefer Carter Hall and Prince Albert.
The remaining two ounces in the can has now been mixed with a hodgepodge of other blends that I had maybe a bowl or two of left.

It's been so long, I barely feel like I can comment on Granger. I bought a tub a long time ago; we're talking almost 20 years? I know I finished it, I remember fishing a lot one summer with Granger in the rotation. I think that I tried it when there were so many different brands of tub tobacco even just at the grocery store, I never got another tub.
I do remember that Granger was a pretty good, unflavored straight burley for the money, though, and that it went well with beer. :D

Same reason "light" cigarettes, beer and mayonnaise are big sellers today: people want to enjoy something casually, without the risks or extremities. You can drink "light" beer all afternoon every day without becoming more than mildly obese, for example, and sometimes you can smoke a pack of light cigarettes without even copping a buzz.

It's good for an all day smoke. No noticeable Anise/Licorice topping and one dimensional in flavor but it's tasty. Seems to gunk up pipes less than most and leaves no trace of moisture.

I've always enjoyed Granger over all the other OTC Burleys but it would always burn my palate (never my tongue) with what seemed like a chemical burn. Drying out the tobacco sufficiently lessened this somewhat but never eliminated it and that is a bummer as I do enjoy the taste and accompanying room note - real old world/Grampa type smoke and very appealing.

I have a love hate relationship with Granger. For awhile, I was loving it. I would rotate it in with my other blends. Then, it got boring. It does have a very unique flavor to it and one that can grow monotonous quickly.

We need to make Granger the new Penzance.

I'm in I bought a few oz from wv smoke great outfit got in the time I read this thread 2 days ago and decided to try and now

Smells better than ch in the bag great cocoa smell. That lasts about 5 min into the smoke then the topping starts threatening your palate. Then the plastic oh hell no. Washing it out with some Wessex burley flake. I've got 2 ozs if anyone wants to try
