Anybody Else Super Fascinated by Stanwell?

When my grandfather passed away, he left me a Dunhill Cumberland apple from the 80’s and a Stanwell shape 10 from the late 50’s. Love both pipes, but the Stanwell sent me down a lifelong rabbit hole.

So much cool history, carvers associated with the brand, iconic shapes, etc. At this point I have a couple Ivarsson, Chonowitz (?), an S. Bang, and Eltang. Has any other brand had so many iconic people associated with it? What’s your favorite Stanwell shapes?

I know people slam the newest iteration of Stanwell, but for the record, I purchased one of the new POTY pipes in an acorn shape and really like it.

There seems to be a LOT of mystery behind many of the Stanwell shapes/origin. I’m not familiar with the shape 194, but that’s from the Eltang era. Probably one of his shapes if I were to hazard a guess.

It's not under the series of famous carvers. It's just listed as "194 Facet".
It resembles one of the Jess Chonowitch shapes, but his is a hexagon and not a "Facet".
Very strange.

I collect shape 63, half bent plateaux Dublin. Have some Danish ones, but very happy with the new Italian ones also.
I also like shape 126, but they haven't made that in ages.

I had a featherweight smooth bent Dublin Stanwell many years ago.

That pipe really showed me how a pipe should smoke. It did things i didnt know were possible.

If my memory serves it was a 240.

The Danish pipe factories were run on a different model to French and English ones.
Stanwell, Pibe Dan and W.O.Larsen encouraged and fostered the talents of their artisans and actively promoted their designs and wares.
And unleashed a wave of Danish design onto a market used to "classic" shapes.

My favourite Stanwell design is Anne Julie's Shape 35 canted egg.


Then there are the different Danish takes on the Bulldog/Rhodesian shapes eg Anne Julie's Shape 11R with its sweeping curves and a couple by Jess Chonowitsch.

For me, they're kind of like Dunhill pipes now in that they're really just trading off pass glories, current production pipes are VERY mediocre. You can find a proper artisan (in the great tradition of those iconic names you mentioned) who can make you a better pipe for a better price.

I like them enough to have a seven day set of Danish Stanwell Dublin pipes.

Left to right: 63M Brass Band, 563M Royal Guard, 63M Vario, 64M Royal Briar churchwarden, 64 Sterling, 20M Handmade reg'd no., and an early (late 80's early 90's) Stanwell Rook.

From what I understand, after an initial rough start in Italy, the pipes made there now are no different than the pipes once made in Denmark. The exception being that now the briar is aged and cured in the Italian manner, rather than how Stanwell did it in Denmark. I think the Danes had better briar, but that's true of most brands, the further back in time you go.

I read somewhere that the current Stanwells are made by Barontini in Italy. They are rumored to also have provided Peterson with the stummels for the Sh series. They also trained the owner of Ser Jacopo. Cesare and his daughters Barbara and Sylvia are the carvers now. I like Barontini's very much. They are great pipes.

I was fascinated with getting one of these, and the one I found on eBay for next to nothing looked rough, and that’s kind. Here it is restored (thread on here somewhere a few years ago) - I smoke it sparingly and only in the fall.

All of my Stanwells, including my Brass Bands, Lenard Elliot would bring to the Wednesday Night Skeet Shoots and offer me, at a fixed price, take it or leave it, and he loved me so much he knew to set the price where I’d always take it and beg for more.



Lenard now shoots among the angel band, where all God’s children always go.

But there’s this kid who’s grown up now and graduated college and he’s always asking me if I have pipes for sale. Sometimes I do.




I need to -request the kid to pick me up -and take him to meet Lenard’s widow and I’ll set the price on the Stanwells this time, you know?

In a word: yes.

Stanwell was the first high production level pipe co that gained my fascination through trial and experience. I have owned many over the years and still have a decent, but smaller, selection in the current standing harem.

I only have 1 Stanwell and it's a Black & White 405. It's a fantastic smoker, lightweight and easy to clench.

This is a good opportunity for me to show off 3 beautiful Stanwells that I was gifted and just finished cleaning up! They were all in fantastic shape but hadn’t been smoked for probably 30+ years so required some sanding and polishing of the vulcanite etc. Theres also a Georg Jensen in the photos.

I should add that when I was first interested in pipe smoking 20 years ago the Stanwell nordic horn was a shape that really grabbed my attention, before I knew anything at all about makers or shapes.

Thats another of the Facet line designed by Jess Chonowitsch.
Its listed as the "Hexagonal" by Jess
Chonowitsch. Mine is the only one that doesn't have a designer name attached. Ive seen this Hexagonal pipe around, ive never seen another of the "194" pipes like ive got. I've emailed Stanwell, ive talked to several Stanwell experts and collectors, but nobody has seen a 194 before. Im not even sure if the one I have is a 194. It doesn't have a number on it. Im just going by the description in the list I posted.
After many years of searching, I have not found a single picture of the 194. I've easily found pictures of all the other pipes in the "Facet" line, but not the 194.
