What I loved about Hearth & Home Marquee White Knight (and more so in Magnum Opus) was the Yenidje. It seems that oriental leaf is extinct, at least commercially, but I still see it included in the description of White Knight. Has anyone smoked recently purchased WK? If so, did it still have that “unflavored soda” note for Yenidje is known?

Good question. From what I've been told by friends who are very good at finding hard to find stuff, Yenidje has has been gone for several years. But doing a search I find it for sale at Leaf Only, so it appears to be currently available. It's possible that current release of White Knight contains Yenidje, the only way to tell is buy a new tin and light up.

I guess it’s better than buying a lottery ticket. Even I don’t win, I still get something. Sutliff had good Orientals in general.

I think they are out of stock and retired the product. I have sampled that particular oriental and I believe it's a nice type of basma but not true yenidje. It's too pale colored.

I did stock up on White Knight before it went belly up. It will be a blend I will miss when the lay tin is used up. Still better than the Germains’s version in my opinion.
I am still searching for something with the same sort of smooth, bland but rich, soapy, balkany goodness as White Knight.

What do you think the next best alternative is? Thr Germain Sobranie match?

Nope - the two are nothing alike.

But for something that has reminds me of all the reasons I like White Knight, try HU's Tuarekh - It is a Balken and the Orientals in it come through in a manner that makes me think of what White Knight is trying to do as well. If you haven't smoked it, you just don't know what I am referring to. If you have - it is unmistakable. I just picked up another time in Cologne, Germany.

For wine and cheese, for example, there are laws that stipulate that what is listed on the label listed be consistent with where and how the product was made. With wine, the grapes MUST have been a particular variety and grown in a particular place.

No such regulation exists for pipe tobacco, and furthermore industry records demonstrate a three-quarter century's long pattern of substituting ingredients for earlier ones for reasons of economics and unavailability.

Now, where Yenidje is concerned, ask yourself: who gets to decide that a tobacco is called Yenidje? Is it a place? And is the "new" Yenidje guaranteed to have come from there? It's also likely a specific variety of tobacco. Was genetic testing done, as is done with wine grapes, to ensure the strain is correct?

To a point, it's overthinking the matter, especially if you enjoy the tobacco and it's similar enough to your memories of it, but let's just say that with certain industries, ingredients are more of an advertising term than a matter of hard science.

All very similar to the Latakia debate. Syrian to Cyprian to Turkish, all came with very distinct flavor changes.

Also if they started making Perique in Mexico, would it still be Perique?
