The Water
Bigvan - I almost got orders there. I think I got passed on because one of my classmates finished a day early and they needed someone ASAP. She's now a less than 3 year IT2 with likely recommendations for IT1 within the next two cycles. I came in as a lowly E-1 and had to do my time before I could take any advancement exams.
Currently an IT3 (rating formerly known as RM and CTO, combined in '04 or some such) on a destroyer in the Pacific Fleet, deployed to the watery wastes. Still a poly-wog, but this deployment might turn into an around-the-world tour with a couple trips into the Realm of Neptune, earning me the title of Shellback. Saw some action last year when a group of Somali pirates hijacked an American yacht called Quest - wasn't my favorite week on the ship.
Earlier in the year we came across an Indian vessel that had broken down on their way to a dry-dock to be repaired. Because it had drifted so far out to sea, the cost of rescue operations was too high for the ship's owner and he essentially left them at sea to die. After about a weeks-worth of red tape cutting and trying to repair their engines, we were given permission to take the 13 crew members on board and return them to Mumbai.
That's my story so far, still have to finish this deployment and maybe make another before I can "retire" and go to college.

Thanks for your service guys!
USARMY Active Duty 2004-2010 OIF "Surge" 07-08 / OIF 07 "Almost Operation New Dawn" 09-10.
I served in the Cavalry as a not so typical Intelligence Analyst. I was qualified on more systems and machines than I can count but of note...Raven, Shadow, other UAV stuff and lots of "cameras". I went on patrol and performed guard just as much, if not more, than our scouts did. Especially during our first deployment.
Got out an E5 (Sergeant). I loved the Army.

Sorry you missed out on Kunia, Harrumphicus. GREAT duty station! Back in the day, you had an 8 or 10 (rarely a 12) hour watch, then you were DONE. No extra or "casual" duty, just sit your watch then go home and pretend you're a civilian. There weren't enough berthing spaces for us on Wheeler AFB or Schoefield Barracks, so we got VHA/BAQ and lived on our own in town!
Like I said, a sweet deal!
