+100I honestly don't get the expensive lighter thing. And it's not because I can't afford one. They're nice, sure. Very well made I have no doubt. But at the end of the day you need a device that provides a soft flame, preferably at 90° to the lighter. Well, you can get all that for less than $3
I can see your point and agree somewhat but apply that same reasoning to pipes, cars and clothes.... we would all be smoking cobs, driving Yugos while wearing burlap onesies
Not the strongest analogies, if I may be so bold. There are 101 things that can go wrong with a cheaply made pipe, car, etc... even clothes for that matter. But a lighter simply needs to provide a flame to light your pipe tobacco, and my £1.50 example does that every bit as well as a £700 Dupont.Quite right. And walking around with our Walkmans and flip phones wondering where we left our address book we had so carefully written out.
Sounds like you're holding the flame to the pipe for too long. Here's one of the oldest in my collection bought in '91, and purchased twenty years before using anything other than Bics and Zippos.the ubiquitous Bic of the unadjustable flame just charred the rim of my brand new churchwarden. :x
Okay, haven't been awake long, and just caught this. Why are you tilting the pipe?Cap'n, I've managed to avoid burning my fingers by tilting the pipe 45° towards the lighter
That is odd.FWIW, I can hold the Bic for several seconds to my Vauen Basic and the rim won't notice

Gotcha. I've seen people do it, just didn't know why.saw that he uses a Bic and does tilt the pipe to avoid burning his thumb. I picked up the habit.
I have charring marks in the back rim on all my pipes. dont know how to upload an image here
