Hi there

After few days I have to take a flight that stops some hours in Ataturk airport in Istanbul, I was wondering if they have any tobacco pipe for sale in the duty free shop? Does anyone have been there? do you know brands and prices? do they sell pipes?

Any info is welcome!

thanks a lot

I'm from Istanbul. I can't give a definite answer but as far as I remember there were none. Also I don't know if it applies to duty free shops but retail tobacconists can't "legally" sell any other pipe tobacco other than Captain Black, MacBaren, Backwoods and Turkish Pipe Tobacco. Some places have under the counter stuff smuggled from some Arab countries but doubt they would have something like that in an airport.
Unfortunate but that was the situation when I left the country. I would love to be proven wrong though. :)

If the Turkish Pipe Tobacco is the local product and locally blended, that might be worth a few tins or pouches. I'd also price the MacBaren to see if it's worth buying. I admit, I'd rather not be flying in and out of Turkey right now, not the best of times.

I'm surprised to hear there aren't any Meers for sale at the airport. The carved pipes are sold as souvenirs and my understanding is the majority never get smoked.

I found in an old post that they have some McClennan and other aromatics, I´ll check about the pipes too. I´ll let you know if I find something

About travelling in an out of Turkey in these days... well not the best times really, but I have to trave due to my work and I have to pass through Istanbul.

I live in Turkey one year, great country and people, really sad what is going on there and the whole situation of the Middle East

After the last attack, airport security has been tripled so (hopefully) it should be safe but yeah not the best time to be in Turkey. They sometimes have meers as souvenirs, but from what I've heard they're mostly just that, souvenirs. And Turkish Pipe Tobacco is too inconsistent for my tastes but if you're feeling adventurous and can find some, try your luck :)
Edit: Tbh I've never seen any McClelland products in any retailers in Turkey but maybe that's just my luck.

I flew into Istanbul last in the summer of 2012, and I do not remember any pipe tobacco sold in duty free shops. I know this as I was looking to buy a box of hand made cigars, and I couldn't find that either. Things may have changed since 5 years ago though ...

It's been a couple og years since I was in Istanbul Airport but I definately saw pipe tobacco in the taxfree shops (together with cigs, RYO anf cigars). I recall some Davidoffs, some aromatics and possibly Dunhills but the selection was rather poor. Can't remember prices.
