I am a Nording fan. I did buy two a while ago from a second hand retailer marked “unsmoked,” that had some issues. On one, the shellac bubbled up on the side of the bowl from the heat. Some Nordings often have a shiny lacquer/shellac finish, not wax that is buffed.

With the other pipe, a dark reddish dye stain came off on the pipe cleaner the first 4-5 times I ran it through the pipe stem, as if it had never dried.

Again, I bought those two from a second dealer, not from a Nording approved retailer and now.guess that they were “seconds.”
That's really strange. I never heard of a pipe make using shellac "inside" the bowl. It serves no purpose and would probably affect the taste. Same goes for dye inside the stem. I can't help but suspect that some restorer/moron tinkered with it to try and make it look new. What a dumbass. puffy

Please re-read my post. The “side” of bowl was lacquered and bubbled up, not the “inside” of the bowl.

I also have a few freehands, and all of them are good smokers...I really like the Hunter series and may have to find one soon!

I’ve never really seen one that visually appealed to me.
Their higher grades, which I don't own, look quite nice. But, otherwise, not many appeal to me either. I do have a few of the more appealing mid-grade ones, a large quarter bent paneled smooth freehand with silver and a large smooth with rusticated top quarter bowl tomahawk with silver. It's rustication effect gives it an almost wax drip look.
