I do like them but I think I only have 1 that is not a bulldog. It’s a Becker I found at GatlinBurlier in Tennessee. I’m pretty sure it was made by the second Becker, a treasure of a find to me.
For physical reasons I won't bore you with, know that diamond/square shanks are MUCH more likely to crack than round ones. (thin/flattened ovals also, for the same reason, but they aren't as common)
Net takeaway? Stick to those with either a band, or are large enough to make the unequal thickness of wood around the mortise a non-issue.
I can see why there’s truth to George’s post. Additionally, and especially, if a diamond shank/stem has a tight fit there’s more “fiddling” sometimes applied when putting them together to line up just right.
