flyw8t, that sounds great.
I too rarely smoke while fishing but will sit on shore before and after, and certainly around the campfire at night.

I have only been flyfishing once, but would love to get back to it. If only I had time and a patient person to teach me the ropes. I do go salt water fishing more often being closer to that type of water. I do find it difficult to smoke a pipe and do almost anything else productive, except maybe grilling.

I love to flyfish. We are blessed with some great streams here in PA and once a year my brother & I take a trip to MT. I keep a pipe in my vest for those contemplative times on a stream waiting to see what's up or at the end of the day rehashing my day's success or the fishes success in frustrating me. Tight lines & happy puffin'

yo puff - re "We are blessed with some great streams here in PA and once a year my brother & I take a trip to MT" - indeed we are so blessed. Are you in SE PA? If so, you ought to join us at Morley's monthly downtown in Philly. Where in MT do you go? I've done MT and the Rockies/CA/NW a few dozen times and must like it, since I keep going back.

lestrout, yes, I live in SE PA near Downingtown. As far as MT, we usually spend a few days in the Y-stone area and a few days around Missoula where we have friends. Tight lines and happy puffin'

I've been fly-fishing since I was in high school. I've been all over Ontario and the Upper-Peninsula of Michigan for browns, specs and rainbows and love the sport. There's nothing like rolling out a tight loop to catch a fish on a fly you tied yourself. My fly-fishing far predates my pipe smoking, but given the thoughtful, artful approach it seems a natural fit with the pipe. I'll be doing both this spring.
Tight lines!

@Zack and Cosmic. What part of Tennessee are you guys talking about? I'm in Cleveland, which is just outside Chattanooga. I'm only about 20min. From several major rivers, surrounded by them actually! Lol! Lakes too!
Mainly East Tn. in the Smokies. Can't remember the name of the falls, but have caught some small Brook trout above the falls inside the park...
Fished a bunch of tiny streams in the park as well- if it has a pool, it's holding trout...
...and for the lazy and hungry, you can always limit out on the river just inside the Gatlinburg city limits- stocked with Rainbows weekly...

I am a fly fisherman (and regular tackle as well). I'm from Michigan, and do most of my fishing on the Lake Michigan tributaries: the Pere Marquette, the Little Manistee, the Big Manistee, Bear Creek, the Muskegon. I'm thinking of doing some winter steelheading in a few weeks.
A pipe is perfect if I'm fishing from a drift boat, not so much while wading.

Thanks to pete and martin for the warm welcome...as donspipe said, fly fishing and pipe smoking seem to be a natural fit - something about a thoughtful, patient approach leading to success. Any fly fisher will tell you its about quality, not quantity. Feeling the hook set in your fingers, and then feathering the spool to apply just the right amount of drag to turn your fish...not unlike nursing a hesitant bowl into an epic smoke.

I took this pic over the summer this year.. The trees were beautiful. I took it on my smart phone and I was pretty surprised at how it came out.

I'm a fisherman and a hunter. I've been flyfishing for exactly 30 years (I started when I was 18). I'm not exclusively a flyfisherman, as I also love surfcasting, and spearfishing too. I love to flyfish both in sweet water and the salt. I'm from NYC, and used to fish the barrier islands quite a bit, like the Rockaways and further out on Shelter Island (between the two forks of Long Island) for Stripers, Blues, Weakfish, Bonito and False Albacore. Years back I used to go to Key West for Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit on an annual trip, but haven't been in many years. The Catskills are where I first cut my teeth flyfishing. Once upon a time I used to tie freshwater dry flies and nymphs, but I lost interest in tying the tiny ones, and now only tie streamers and other saltwater flies.
The two most memorable flyfishing trips I've been on were Alaska and Kamchatka. The latter was a 7 day float trip down the Two Yurt River. It was pretty epic and my buddy and I were definitely roughing it. Saw more than a few grizzlies on that trip.
Since moving to Southern California, I haven't been fishing that much locally. The inshore fishing here simply doesn't compare to the Northeast Atlantic coastline. I've only done a little bit of Eastern Sierras flysfishing, and need to explore it more.
I've actually been spending more time bowhunting than fishing this last year. Sadly, today was the last day of the late season archery for deer in my local zone. I went out yesterday and today, as well as numerous times earlier in the season, but did not fill my tag this year. Ah well, it's always a great time when hiking with a bow (or rifle). Just being out in the wilderness and seeing all kinds of animals and tracks is the best part!
Smoking pipes is new to me, so I haven't tried to smoke while fishing, and I wouldn't while hunting deer, as they are wary and have keen olfactory senses. I'm guessing I would prefer to smoke stream side after fishing.

Houndstooth, you should look into fishing in Baja California. Epic salt water fishing down there.

Buster, I fished in Baja in 2005 for my bachelor party. My buddies, and I stayed in Cabo San Lucas, and we hired a few pangs with guides for a day and also did some surfcasting on our own on other days. I caught a Jack in the surf, and a small shark from the Panga, and a buddy of mine caught a nice, big Mahi Mahi that we ate that evening, and another buddy caught a small sailfish that was released. We fist caught some Humboldt squid for bait, which was an experience in itself. Those things are HUGE, with eyes the size of large grapefruits… no joke.
That's the extent of my Baja fishing, however, on a few dual sport rides I have done riding and camping down through the sea of Cortez side, I discovered a jewel of a place that I intend to go back and spearfish sometime. It's well off the beaten track, and I learned that several world record fish have been taken out of the bay in question by a pretty famous spearfishing pro. I didn't have a speargun or my free diving gear at the time, but the next time I return, I certainly intend to.
