I'm a fisherman and a hunter. I've been flyfishing for exactly 30 years (I started when I was 18). I'm not exclusively a flyfisherman, as I also love surfcasting, and spearfishing too. I love to flyfish both in sweet water and the salt. I'm from NYC, and used to fish the barrier islands quite a bit, like the Rockaways and further out on Shelter Island (between the two forks of Long Island) for Stripers, Blues, Weakfish, Bonito and False Albacore. Years back I used to go to Key West for Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit on an annual trip, but haven't been in many years. The Catskills are where I first cut my teeth flyfishing. Once upon a time I used to tie freshwater dry flies and nymphs, but I lost interest in tying the tiny ones, and now only tie streamers and other saltwater flies.
The two most memorable flyfishing trips I've been on were Alaska and Kamchatka. The latter was a 7 day float trip down the Two Yurt River. It was pretty epic and my buddy and I were definitely roughing it. Saw more than a few grizzlies on that trip.
Since moving to Southern California, I haven't been fishing that much locally. The inshore fishing here simply doesn't compare to the Northeast Atlantic coastline. I've only done a little bit of Eastern Sierras flysfishing, and need to explore it more.
I've actually been spending more time bowhunting than fishing this last year. Sadly, today was the last day of the late season archery for deer in my local zone. I went out yesterday and today, as well as numerous times earlier in the season, but did not fill my tag this year. Ah well, it's always a great time when hiking with a bow (or rifle). Just being out in the wilderness and seeing all kinds of animals and tracks is the best part!
Smoking pipes is new to me, so I haven't tried to smoke while fishing, and I wouldn't while hunting deer, as they are wary and have keen olfactory senses. I'm guessing I would prefer to smoke stream side after fishing.
