Any Domestic Latakia Attempts?

Dan, I didn't even think about your blends. Mostly the ones that were disasters, like the Sutliff abomination. Just because it's a copy doesn't mean that I think it sucks. But, if it is a great blend, it would hold it's own with an original name and marketing.
But, this was originally meant to be an argument over making a new latakia, instead of trying to replicate a dead one.
A friend of mine who is a homegrow enthusiast tried making "Latakia" and it turned out to be a really nice smoke, but tastes more like dark-fired Kentucky and BBQ ribs than traditional Latakia.
I read in old book somewhere last month that N. Rustica is/was used to make Latakia. I don't know if there is flavor difference between it and the N. tabacum commonly used.
If you like a consumable product, why wouldn't you attempt to (re)create it, especially if the original supply were at risk?
That's not to say it need be exact and certainly does not disqualify variations.
Many of us happen to enjoy the "traditional" latakia flavor, so looking for a local option/variation seems like a logical consideration.
Any new or different flavors to come from the attempts are just bonus points.
I like Maryland style steamed blue crab. All of the Philistines down here boil them, so I occasionally seek out a batch of live ones to prepare to my liking.
I may even listen to a cover band while eating them... :nana:

One of the benefits that may come from pushing pipe tobacco underground by over regulating could be the uprising of regional blends. It would be interesting to see blends used by different areas of homegrowers.
Yeh, in rethinking the whole cover band types of tobacco copies... yeh, there's a place for them. But, you never see a cover band rise to fame, like you see it in pipe tobacco. Yeh, keep copying these, but let's see some risk taking with more creative endeavors also. I do like what the new Three Nuns is doing with it's new variations, and what War Horse did with it's red and green variations.

That is in fact an excellent cover. I agree, the additions to three nuns was more interesting than just relaunching the tobacco, and War Horse covered a gap in the market for me, which transcended any other feelings personally.
Up here in Maine, at the Portland Museum of Art, we have a pretty good copy of the Mona Lisa, which isn't currently on display. It is the OTHER Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo himself.
