As my favorite pipes are all under 60 dollars, I'm used to doing "stem work" on all of them. Lightly sanding or filling the draft hole at the button usually. But I wouldn't want to do it on something 5 to 10 times the price! It should come with a comfortable bit at that point me thinks. From all these complaints about stems, I get the impression some of you guys should learn how to "tweak" your own stems. By that I mean learn to work it to get it the way you want. With a few simple tools you can do wonders. A fine file, some sandpaper, compound a drill bit or two and a few other items and you can do wonders. There is quite a bit about this on the nets. Just a friendly suggestion....
No purchase yet! I am waiting for the Chicago Pipe Show with a mission to see some of the suggestions in person. I am hoping that they are on display there.
I own Castello and Savinelli. Have a Mastro Gepetto.I saw a pic of him yesterday with a nice looking Sav.
The Sav in the pic was given to me by my wife. It is the only pipe she has bought or picked out. I treasure it for that exact reason.I saw a pic of him yesterday with a nice looking Sav.
Hey Doc, I came across this youtube video looking for something else entirely; thought you might be interested. from the title - 10 Alternatives to Castello - it looks like someone had the same question in mind ...Any suggestions on a more affordable pipe that may be similar?

Become a regular with a vendor, like weekly. A vendor threw this one at me for $150 when I made another purchase. If I could get one under $300, I would not have started this thread.
I haven't seen a Maestro de Paja like that but I believe that is a "moisture trap" so you can insert a pipe cleaner and remove the moisture. It's like the part of a Cavalier below the bowl.Hi Good Morning,
Anyone familiar with this type of shank? its a Mastro de Paja

Is it like an 1981,83? Just wondering if there is a year mark on it. Doesn’t look like any MASTRO I’ve seen before. (Even without the tamper.I had a pipemaker to have a look at it and have it opened. It is indeed a tamper

Its a new old stock pipe - previous owner had kept it for 15 years, but then he says it was a gift. There are no date marks. it could have been a limited series, or a one off. I would say late 90s, early 00s..?Is it like an 1981,83? Just wondering if there is a year mark on it. Doesn’t look like any MASTRO I’ve seen before. (Even without the tamper.
