I have been smoking for 3+ years now and have tried about 150 blends and have never been sick except once when I loved a bowl of Amphora Kentucky and smoked a second bowl back to back. My mistake but some chocolate and ginger ale saved me.

That said I have recently watch some YTPC videos where some blends just hit experienced smokers the wrong way. StuffNThings can’t smoke GLP Filmore, then Gribley can’t smoke Elizabethan.

Has anyone else had similar oddities or does anyone out there know why this happens? Allergy? Chemical Reactions? Stems in mix? Etc?

Oh yeah a few blends that I smoke regularly have the potential to make me sick. I only smoke them after a meal. Two that come to mind are Burley Flake #1 and Bayou Morning Flake. I would NEVER smoke those two on an empty stomach unless I wanted to make my stomach even more empty after the smoke.

Are they supposed to? Honestly, never had a blend that made me sick.
Not suppose too.. me either. I guess I am fortunate so far. Chewing tobacco and dips make me dizzy just smelling them…. But pipe tobacco is wonderful to me. I was just curious if anyone knows why it happens. It’s a real reaction but so strange that it’s a specific blend for a specific individual.

This is a good point. I usually smoke on an empty stomach but with my third cup of coffee in the morning. I put a teaspoon of honey and teaspoon of creamer in my coffee so that may remedy it for me.

Nothing comes to mind. It’s unusual even for a cigar to make me queasy let alone pipe tobacco. Caveat being I’ve never tried 5 Bros. I do have a pouch but haven’t opened it yet.

Chemical aversions and tobacco allergies aside, it seems like what I’m hearing from the crowd is that any queasiness is blood sugar related and therefore should be easy to work around for most.

If I smoke a strong cigar to fast I can feel the vitamin N kick in, but I can't think of any particular tobacco blend that has made me sick. There have been times where I have smoked to many bowls and felt a little off afterwards, but can't think of anyone blend that has done it.

When I get together for my cigar weekend, and our group sits around smoking 3-6 cigars per day; we always snack on gummy bears. The sugar helps counter the nicotine, so we keep a bowl on the table and just eat some throughout the day. When I tell people that they laugh, but it works. We've been doing it for over 10 years, and we never have an issue of feeling nauseous. Even after having some strong cigars.

C&D Sweet English. The flavor seemed akin to that of vomit, which made me a little queasy. Easily my least favorite of all the blends I've tried.
Never gotten sick from nicotine smoking a pipe. Cigars and chewing tobacco, though...

I can't imagine having to constantly dodge that bullet.

Literally born lucky (nicotine sensitivity falls on a spectrum and is hardwired), I can smoke 2-3 two-inch-deep bowls of Brown Bogie or Peterson's Irish Flake back to back in a closed room, and feel no different than a single puff from a Marlboro Light cigarette. Which is to say no yuck-effect at all. (I've never actually smoked a cigarette).

On the other hand, I was also born so ugly that dogs yelp and run away as fast as they can from the slightest glimpse of me, so the whole genetic thing ain't always your friend.

I've had a few bad blends, but the only one that pushed me closest to sickness was Sutliff 515 RC-1. I don't think I made it a dozen puffs in before dumping it and starting over with some Plum Pudding to get that awful taste out of my mouth. Fortunately, the pipe did not require an exorcism. Never again.

If I want ketchup or vinegar, I'll eat a hamburger or some coleslaw respectively. Neither of those condiments have a shred of business being in my pipe. Period.

I don't think I've ever gotten sick from smoking a pipe. There are some blends I don't like but not nausea inducing. I did get kind of dizzy once chewing on a hunk of Irish brown XX I think it was.
