Was perusing at a local antique shop in Anchorage and found a cool little pipe stand and box that will be fun to restore for $20. Also grabbed an old meer lined LHS Ultra Fine shape 54 pipe with 14K Gold band i’ll be cleaning up as well!

They also had a couple old pipes previously owned by a local Alaskan celebrity watercolor painter named Byron Birdsall, but they were too pricey for the likes of me.

Looking forward to a couple new restoration projects!

Awesome finds. I really like the looks of that pipe stand/tobacco box. The pipe is not too shabby either!

Yeah the pipe was an afterthought. I guess LHS was one of the main providers of pipes for American troops during WWII, which was the height of the company’s prominence. This one is post war, but I thought it was a cool company story and it was cheap so I nabbed it.

What would you call the arrangement of the grain on that pipe? Its like a 90 degree rotated cross grain.
Yeah, I don’t know. Birdseye on front and back, but you’re right the cross grain on both sides sort of becomes straight as it sweeps down the bowl and into the shank. It does the same thing on the other side...

Nice score! The LHS is sweet. Stinger?

I also want to know what that's called and how it happens. I love it when a pipe does that.

alaskanpiper:

A very nice prize. Most of the antique/junk shops in my area have closed up in the last five years. With the exception of Goodwill and Saint Vincent's. I find nothing there.

However, on my trips inland there are several shops that I have found prizes. The wife and I love hunting through those places. I mostly see damaged, burned and cracked Graybows and the occasional Kaywoodie.
I did find a hound dog pipe stand for $20 and a never smoked Petersen Dalky for $35(it is now smoked). Those were the best things I have found while junking.

Two nice finds. I do enjoy searching through antique or junk shops. It is always cool to find something with a little character. You certainly scored there with both the pipe stand and the grain on that pipe.
