Another Vegas Thread

I know this topic gets tossed up every six or so months. I have looked at last threads but figured I'd bring it up again.....

I will be in Las Vegas in August. We are staying on the new strip near the middle of the action. I don't think there are any good tobacconists around the strip but I am willing to cab it if it is worth it to do so. If anyone has some recommendations let me know, I have tried googling but most results are cigar shops and head shops. I am looking for a good selection of tins or bulk.

The largest and best supply of pipe tobacco belongs to a private citizen, a member here who may or may not ID himself.
LV is a wasteland for tobacco shops. I advise to anyone on any trip (almost) anywhere: Take your own supplies, and be pleasantly surprised if you can add something good for reasonable cost.

Vegas in August...the mind boggles. You won't be able to cab anywhere because the heat will melt all tires.

For God's sake why? I would not survive this for 5 minutes. It gets above 70 here and I start to sweat like Thomas Eagleton.

For pipe tobacco we have Tobacco Leaf in Vegas (do the google) and that's about it. Everything else is mostly geared toward cigars. (We have some fantastic, albeit expensive, cigar places.)
Tobacco Leaf has at least a selection available for the traveler who may have forgotten, or ran out of, his supply.
Let me know if you would like any restaurant or bar recommendations.

Ha, August wasn't by choice. My wifes pool team won a tournament here and are playing in the cpa apa tournament in Las Vegas in August.

Most people who travel to Vegas at their own expense tend to spend their time in the casinos. Actually, there are other attractions. I think the J. Paul Getty estate has a high level art museum there, among other things. And various amenities offered the gambling tourists could, selectively, attract those less interested in "the tables." But it just ain't a pipe shop place. The overhead where the crowds congregate is way too high for the gentle commerce around pipes. So say I, never having been there. I always wanted to go on the company's dime, but it didn't happen. For me, it is a spectacle I'd enjoy beholding. The money I'd spend on gambling, I'd rather use for travel, elsewhere.

If there's but one store there- and there could be several- it was pathetic in terms of pipes or tobacco, and the staff had at least one asshole make himself known.

Us pipe smokers are relegated to the storm drains with the homeless.
I know some folks like the Tobacco Leaf, I'm not them.

Many cigar smokers are real gentlemen who just enjoy their sticks. But cigars do attract people trying to be larger than life as they see it, loud college boys at the horse track, young financial district fellas at Nat Sherman's in Manhattan talking above the conversational level. A five dollar cigar and suddenly I'm Winston Churchill or Al Capone...not.

Whenever my travels have taken me through or near Las Vegas, I've timed it to pass through quickly in the dark of night.
If not for the gross spectacle of Vegas and all of the retirees in Phoenix trying to grow St. Augustine lawns in the desert, the west coast may not have half of their water and power issues.

Vegas is actually one of the most water efficient cities in the U.S.
The dead of night is the best time to see the spectacle.

I am from Canada, my fear is I bring down sealed tobacco and don’t finish it, then they nail me with duty on my open tin....

Tobacco Leaf on Lake Mead and Rainbow on the north side of town is the best shop in town for tin and bulk selection. Has pipes too. I typically don't buy pipes in shops though, cause I'm more into artisan carvers and B&Ms don't typically carry them.
August is kind of an odd time to visit Vegas; that's when we're hitting 105-110F regularly. It's also a dry heat and most people are completely lost about it when they visit. There's no humidity here whatsoever. It will dry out blends a lot faster than elsewhere.

Average humidity in LV is just under 25%, and it may feel like 0, but if it were zero, you'd be dead. Low is June around 13% RH, and high is 40%, in January. But it's the driest big city in the country.
