For over a hundred years, in free nations such as America, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and other nations that have long traditions of individual freedom an athlete can chose to go professional or be an Olympian.

These blurbs about men selling their photos for the enjoyment of other men are not new. Women don’t consume much pornography. Men patronize all the gin joints, strip clubs, brothels, and other such institutions of sin and degradation or there wouldn’t be any.

The Committee's paramount objective is to make money. They can only do that by selling, selling the Games to a city/country, tickets, TV rights and etc. So, the events must appeal to an audience. I, apparently, am no longer a target.

Of course they're focused on profitability. Show me something that loses money (aside from the government) and I'll show you something that ceases to exist. I deal with the events I have no interest in, such as break dancing, the same way I deal with posters I don't care for. I ignore them. There's plenty of options with my streaming options, I just switch to one I enjoy.

I deal with the events I have no interest in, such as break dancing, the same way I deal with posters I don't care for. I ignore them. The situation is not either A or B with no C, though...

The middle ground being sufficient earnings to keep things operating the same way they did for a half century---with dignity and a sense of tradition and intrinsic importance---and not go equity-investor-style crazy by chasing every imagined "opportunity" to make as much short-term profit as possible.

That quarterly earnings approach---with "fiduciary responsibility" always being its excuse---is a company killer as reliable as gravity.

I lost interest in the Olympics a long time ago when they started allowing professionals (e.g., basketball) to participate. Olympic events come and go, change the channel if the current fare isn't appealing.

I don't see how adding some events I don't care to watch negatively affects the Olympics in a negative fashion. I suppose if the cost to put on any event cannot be covered by the additional revenue the event generates, it could happen. I do agree, break dancing as an Olympic sport seems WAY over the top. Regardless, I have really enjoyed watching this Olympics despite the 10 seconds of my life wasted watching the Break competition before I figured out what is was and switched channels.

A quick read of IOC principles will help those of you denigrating the Olympics understand that they, the IOC, is simply doing what their "mission" intends, as they see it. As a "private" organization they are answerable only to their "stakeholders" or, members. I suspect many of our members have no idea what the objectives of the IOC are and, really couldn't care less.

That pretty much tells me all I need to know about the IOC.

The IOC said "they" have no established rules/tests they accept at this time. I'd guess they'll have something in place before the next games. Unless they want to remain very flexible with respect to that subject. What it'll be? Really none of our business except for our own personal take. It's their games and their rules, the viewing public can simply "stuff it." Well, unless viewership declines steeply and the IOC's income takes a severe hit. Time will tell.

I’ve never read their “mission”, but I know what I’ve watched from when I was young until now.
The Olympic Federation may as well be the UN, or the EU.

They have little interest in what you or I want. The IOC is most likely focused on "spenders", the younger generations. They'll get along fine no matter what we think. We are not in the demographics they want. Infuriating isn't it, to no longer matter.
