Another One Requiring A New Stem

My meerschaum PAD continues.
Another pipe bought ,it requires a new stem,as the original amber one is cracked (not unusual) .
The pipe has the hallmarks of Singleton & Cole Birmingham for 1910

Whatever you do hang on to the original stem. Collectors value them highly.

The hallmark is actually 1900 , I miss typed it

unfortunately on arrival it was ffound to have a crack on the other side to the photographs shown on the listing.
sadly being returned for a refund.
shame really as it looked a nice pipe.

However I sent a cheeky buy it now bid and won this one.
Again needs a new stem but unsmoked 1892 hallmarked.Unless someone has refitted old silver on a modern bowl.But the price I paid is similar to a lower priced modern pipe

How's the quality of the Meer back then vs todays meerscham pipes?

my understanding is that the actual block quality was better back then,whether this was all the block was better or the quantity of high quality blocks was better
I dont know why other than I have read that the best meerschaum comes from deep down in the mines.

Paul, in my opinion 100% that's all antique. Silver is, amber is, case is, case fits pipe like a glove = it's original. New stem is lovely, who made it?

the stem was made by Geoff at Cambridge Tobacco Pipe Repairs | Precision Craftmanship - https://www.cambridgepiperepairs.co.uk/ in the UK

he does all of my repairs as it is easier to send to the Uk than to US

Interestingly Geoff thinks the reason the original amber stem was broken was because the silver ring on the stem wasnt fully dressed level with the meerschaum and someone had tried to push it on further by screwing the stem on hard.hence the cracked stem at the tenon end
