I'm a new pipe smoker in the Southern California area. Looking forward to learning more about pipe smoking.

I do have a question that I did not find an answer to when I searched it. How does your body become acclimated to nicotine. Just light exposure over time? I'm sure we all are affected differently, but that there are some commonalities as well.

Thanks

Welcome. Every one was a noob at some point. Some people are more sensitive to nicotine than others. I have a low tolerance, but have learned how to manage it and still enjoy those nic bomb blends.

Whereas I have a super high tolerance to caffeine. If I can’t sleep at night I’ll slam a large diet RedBull and be fast asleep ten minutes later.

Some blends with also test your body’s chemistry. It’s just how it is.

Welcome, from temporarily at Lake Tahoe.

You can put your location in your Profile—(please!—because people will forget!) That will save questions in the future as to where you live when you later mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos, wildfires, air quality, etc., etc..
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. Just country if you must.

Welcome aboard from Florida. If I have a blend that I know is high in nicotine, I do three things to mitigate the effects: 1) I eat a meal before I smoke. Having food in your stomach helps. 2) I very slowly sip on the pipe. And 3) I use a smaller bowl size for a high nic blend (around a group 2). I have never had my tolerance towards nicotine change over time, only my approach. Enjoy.

wellcome from Germany! about nic can be very personal i guess.

In my personal experience for example years ago when i smoked cigarrets or i was using vapers with a nic concentration of 0,3mg i was totally adict.. since morning to the night.. no stop..

but with tobacco pipe for me is other world.. i can stay all the day without smoke, without any nic, and then at the night enjoy one pipe.. and its so relaxing and nice. Still takes me some discipline but i can manage it.

Also with the pipe smoking is the only thing i can manage for stay one or 2 days without smoke nothing and dont get crazy, for me the nic adiction here is not so much, and of course i guess your tolerance to nic will changes depends wich blend you smoke.

Have a great time learning about the art of pipe smoking, and be part of the rare-breed.

Best advice I could offer:
**********************************
Buy pipe tobacco sample-size packets from the major tobacco retailers. Buy some Aromatics some English, and other offerings....or.... buy small quantities of BULK pipe tobaccos. You'll get to sample different tobaccos without spending a small fortune on larger amounts of tobaccos that you may or may not like.
**********************************
Don't smoke on an empty stomach. Eat before smoking if possible. Suck on some chocolate, candy, or sip something sweet while smoking your pipe. Retching with your head in a toilet isn't fun. Nicotine will do it. If your head buzzes...it's already too late. Eat before smoking and reduce the possibilities.
**********************************
Watch You-Tube tutorials, reviews, about pipes, tobacco selection, and how to smoke a pipe. Very helpful advice. Wish these tools were around when I first started back in 1966.
**********************************
Buy yourself a nice pipe. The best you can afford, but you don't need to spend a small fortune to get a good pipe. Restored/refurbished Estate pipes, are a great bargain. eBay and Etsy sell some very nice pipes. Many retailers specialize in restored pipes.
**********************************
Many things you'll read about pipes and pipe-smoking.... are purely personal, supposition, conjecture, opinion, unprovable. You are sovereign, and you will have your own likes and dislikes. That's all that matters. Every hobby or club can have their snobs. Avoid taking the bait. If you ask a question...expect differing answers and some strong opinions.
**********************************
Pipe-smoking is supposed to relax you and be fun. Do it privately or with friends....but enjoy the ritual, the inner peace, the solitude. Ignore the comments, or stares from the PC crowd. Shut out the inane clamor of this cruel world- and enjoy your own self-generated reverie. Turn on, tune in, and, drop out.

This forum will school you. Good luck.

Greetings from the UK!

And as far as nicotine tolerance goes I think you'll build tolerance the more you smoke, though with pipe tobaccos I imagine to what level would depend on the nicotine content of the blends you smoke..
