There are a lot of variables that can get in the way.

Your palate, and what you fed it through out the day, and at the time of smoking, can certainly have an effect.

In time you will learn what personally throws your palate off, and also various types of foods and beverages to avoid, so that you always have better consistency.

Of course, state of health at the time, besides your palate, your gut, sinuses etc...

I went looking for Dorchester. Found the Esoterica Tobacciana Dorchester. It’s sold out everywhere. High scores. Is this the one?
Esoterica blends are hard to find because no one really likes them. They reduced the amount they make and only a handful of die hards smoke it.

Just kidding. It’s popular - but, you have to ask if it’s worth it to you. Some people say it tastes like cough syrup. Others love it. People who hate it might actually love it but tell you that so you aren’t one more customer in line. ?‍♂️ It’s a game for some blends. Good luck figuring that one out.

That’s why you should find what you enjoy - buy it, like it, and smoke it. Just don’t buy too much of what you aren’t sure about. Do you let people tell you what your taste in women should be? (Disclaimer - do you let people tell you what your taste should be for he/him/she/her/them/they?) proceed with caution - there are tons of blends out there - enjoy. Have fun - and don’t get roped in.

I get fruit/floral tones out of Dorchester, no cough syrup here.

Dunbar was like fermented apricot.

And Tilsbury and Brighton, have nice fruity/floral tones too.

I love all these blends by Esoterica, absolutely amazing! ?

2nd week of smoking. Yesterday morning brushed teeth, drank my 1st cup of coffee, news, etc. Then smoked my first try with Captain Black Original. It was amazing, taste, my jowls we watering with sweet flavor all day.

BUT then excitedly my after dinner smoke was not the same. Same pipe, same tobacco, but just seemed bland. Actually tasted a little ash burn flavor on tongue.

What the heck is going on? Does what you eat or drink prior effect your palate? Did I over light and get it too hot? Did just 1 day of open pouch change the flavor?

Now I am on a mission to find it again. I am repeating my steps from yesterday. Brushed teeth, cup of coffee with honey, and about to go light up..
If I can make a suggestion.. and I might’ve read this on this forum somewhere. I honestly can’t recall where I picked it up, but it makes a difference for me.

I was getting that ashy taste in one of my pipes. And it was quite distracting. Tasted unpleasant, and made my mouth feel chalky. And I was faithfully running my pipe cleaners through the stem and swabbing the bowl after a smoke. But I was largely neglecting to clean the shank. Started focusing on that, and it made all the difference.

I’ve found that an unpleasant taste, and particularly that ashy taste you describe, is largely attributable to a dirty shank.

Hope this helps

What we eat really effect the taste of the tobacco. I just had Subway sandwich, with mustard, tomato, and barbeque sauce. After a while, i smoke my pipe, i tasted and smelled nothing! ? The best is still morning, after brushing my teeth.

If you haven’t found it yet, here’s a tip that worked for me!

Call a B&M and ask if they have it in stock. I did this recently with a Lakeland, Bosun Cut Plug. Very few online retailers had it. And the ones who did have it would only sell it in larger 1 lb. quantities for upwards of $70-$100.

I called Boswell’s, had a wonderful chat with the tobacconist, and ordered a couple ounces. It wasn’t listed at all on their website. I was told they actually don’t put everything on the site to give in-store customers some love.

Some of the really good ones I’m familiar are Boswell’s in PA, and The Country Squire in MS. I’m sure some of the members here could recommend some others to call.

You mean the wooden part between the bowl and stem?

I clean the piss out of my pipes after every single bowl. I use BJ Long Tapered fluffy cleaners and BJ Long Tapered Bristle cleaners. I go through maybe 6-8 cleaners per bowl and make sure the shank and mortise get special attention as that is where the worst flavors can come through when not cleaned. I use 3-4 bristle cleaners in the shank and one for the mortise.

My system works for me. It may not be for you but I can say I don't remember the last time I had a bad smoke.

I’ve learned to favor a certain side drink with the few blends I regular enjoy. Pegasus has become my black coffee blend. Granger I’ve found tastes best with a sweetened hot tea. Don’t know why, but after a sip of the sweet tea, the smoke across the tongue makes the flavor really pop. Crooner it doesn’t matter. It’s such a unique taste.

LOL - twas more of a rhetorical question. Wanted to spur you to be more conscientious of what flavors may or may not be affecting your tastebuds before smoking.
Lol. I thought you were going to analyze it.. like maybe that Reese’s cup was the problem. ?

Wow that’s some cleaning. I do clean after each bowl but it just a good pipe cleaner scrubbing.

If you’re OCD about having a clean debris free draught hole/shank, be careful with Bristled cleaners, I’ve had the nylon bristles come off using, Blitz, Brigham, and Vauen, and they start to build up inside the draught hole/shank.

I only use soft cleaners now by B.J. Long.
