2nd week of smoking. Yesterday morning brushed teeth, drank my 1st cup of coffee, news, etc. Then smoked my first try with Captain Black Original. It was amazing, taste, my jowls we watering with sweet flavor all day.

BUT then excitedly my after dinner smoke was not the same. Same pipe, same tobacco, but just seemed bland. Actually tasted a little ash burn flavor on tongue.

What the heck is going on? Does what you eat or drink prior effect your palate? Did I over light and get it too hot? Did just 1 day of open pouch change the flavor?

Now I am on a mission to find it again. I am repeating my steps from yesterday. Brushed teeth, cup of coffee with honey, and about to go light up..

Ever since I started smoking a pipe, the phenomena of why one smoke was great and another, same blend, same pipe, was not, has been discussed. There is no accounting for it except wild speculation.

Sometimes mood, time of day, time of year, and alignment of the stars has a greater influence on us than we mere mortals can comprehend.

I once had a Nirvana moment with GLPs Laurel Heights in a Nording, but I’ve never been able to get a smoke from that blend nor pipe that was equivalent. I now hate that damned pipe, and rarely ever pop a tin of that tobacco anymore.
Go figure.

For the longest time I was unable to smoke Stonehaven. My first bag was spectacular. After that, my heart was broken cause I was unable to get that same flavor. I kind of retraced my steps like you as well, but to no avail. On further reflection, I just rec’d a bag of 2014 Stonehaven in a trade. I did it cause my RDF has become difficult to source of late. After smoking it, I found it to be good, but no where as it was the first time. I was looking for the Reservoir Dogs intro with Tarantino explaining “Like a Virgin”. ?
So, I jumped over to the Dunbar/Dorchester ? and that was all she wrote. I mean this stuff is horrible shit and I highly encourage you all to avoid it. ?☕

After I'm up. Coffee made, very strong black coffee. I usually smoke a full balkan and it's wonderful.
But I inherited Carter's pills, and the my taste buds aren't the same a few hours later. By evening I get the full flavor back. That is until my evening meditation.
The veterans hospital prescribed a bunch.
Just saying many things can effect the taste.

Sounds like you are over thinking your smoking experience. Prepare your pipe and smoke it. Enjoy it for what it is at the moment. As has been said, a tobacco and a pipe will change in taste from time to time. Enjoy the moment and don't wonder "what did I do wrong," because you probably didn't do anything wrong. A pipe is a moment in time experience, so enjoy it for what it is.

Just as an aside, I went for a week without smoking when I was living in two places and my pipe were down South. I remember the sensation of that first smoke after a weeks absence.

Everyone thanks for responses. I did have a good smoke this morning. As a matter of fact 2 bowls.. ? I do think my smoke last night was partly a bad packing on my part (to tight) and I smoked it too hard trying to keep it lit. This morning i slowed down, tampered more often and at about half was she held her own.

I think you probably answered your own question. Packing and pacing are fundamentals of pipe smoking that can make or break any smoke. Packing should become a careful exercise, smoking at a slow pace is a learned practice. You will find your methods over time and errors. Having said all that... what you ate before a smoke can most definitely affect a smoke. But you will learn that over time as well. I will say avoid sugars if possible, and a clean mouth and tongue definitely help.
