Looks like a fun project. I see the crack in the shank. Ouch. Back in the day, one would have had a band put on that shank to help support that crack. Nowadays, I don't know many who can do such work. You might could wrap that portion of the shank with a decorative cord and then shellac it heavily. Might look okay.
